Could the Dallas Cowboys bring back Ezekiel Elliott? What about AJ Dillon? Hunter Renfrow? All of that and more in today's Cowboys news.

After a long, arduous wait for the Dallas Cowboys to make a play in free agency, it’s all over. The Cowboys could also see a reunion with a former star.

Linebacker Eric Kendricks seemed like a sure signing by the San Francisco 49ers. That was until Jerry Jones swooped in and made him an offer. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the former Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings linebacker will instead sign with the Cowboys.

Kendricks, brother of former NFL linebacker Mychal Kendricks, was drafted with the 45th overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. The one-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection played the first eight years of his career with Minnesota, compiling 919 tackles (579 solo), 54 tackles for loss, 29 quarterback hits, 15 sacks, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, three defensive touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

Could Cowboys Potentially Sign Ezekiel Elliott?

Free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott could be in line to return to his old stomping grounds. Patrik Walker of the Cowboys’ team site wrote that the 28-year-old RB, who spent the first seven years of his career with Dallas, could be a fit for the next iteration of its backfield.

“(AJ) Dillon is in play, I believe, but I’ll also repeat what I said on
@CowboysBreak: I wouldn’t rule out a possible reunion with Ezekiel Elliott (and then also drafting an RB to tandem). His relationship with the #Cowboys is still positive and the dialogue has remained open.”

Elliott was typically used in short-yardage situations for New England in 2023. He had 184 carries for 642 rushing yards (3.5 yards per carry) and three rushing touchdowns on the ground, in addition to leading the team in receptions with 51, adding 313 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Throughout his career with the Cowboys, Elliott had 1,881 rushing attempts for 8,904 yards and 71 touchdowns to go with 305 catches for 2,336 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Elliott was in Dak Prescott’s private suite for Dallas’ Wild Card matchup against the Green Bay Packers. The two have a long-standing, well-documented friendship.

A Deal Right Up Dallas’ Alley

Free agent wide receiver Hunter Renfrow could be an option for the Cowboys, according to Pro Football Network’s Tony Catalina.

“The Cowboys are set with their top two WRs for 2024 — CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks — but a consistent third option has been something they have been looking for,” Catalina wrote. “With Michael Gallup set to be released or traded, Renfrow may be a cost-effective option Dallas can bring into the fold.

“It’s not a big-time move, but it is one that could be sneaky good, and that’s seemingly all the Cowboys look to do in free agency.”

The wide receiver from Myrtle Beach made the Pro Bowl in 2021, finding 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns. Since then, his production has tailed off significantly with missed time in 2022. He never returned to form in 2023. Last season, Renfrow had 25 catches for 255 yards and no touchdowns.

He’s still only 28 years old and could be a solid weapon for Prescott to target.

    AJ Dillon Could Join Cowboys

It wouldn’t hurt for Dallas to find its next starting running back in the coming weeks. One name that is on the radar is former Packers tailback AJ Dillon, according to NFL Network’s Jane Slater. She reports that the interest is mutual between the two sides.

Dillon, 25, has logged four seasons in Green Bay after being drafted with the 62nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

“Quadzilla,” as he’s affectionately known by fans, has been a productive back with the Packers with 597 carries for 2,428 rushing yards (4.1 yards per carry) and 16 rushing touchdowns. He has also provided 86 catches for 763 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.
