Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gave an update on the front office’s mindset at the NFL trade deadline approaching Tuesday afternoon.
Latest From Jerry Jones on the Trade Deadline
It seems that Jones still hasn’t shifted his mindset regarding the team participating in any trades with other teams. The Cowboys owner said trades are competitive in nature, but nothing is happening right now that is sparking interest.
Jones said making a trade would require any adjustments to the existing contracts on a player traded for or the player being traded.
As far as his stance on not making trades to get to a higher level like other teams have done to grow their roster personnel, Jones said the execution of the current roster impacts the decision.
He said assessing where a team is ahead of the deadline and at any point in the season has a few factors involved. One is noticing things come together in the progression within a couple of weeks and seeing players “gel together” on the field.
Jones gave insight into how trades work in the building, saying the Cowboys’ front office has a sense of where possibilities actually are.

“Like anything, you might create one that might be available,” said Jones. He explained that he could call someone up to suggest the team’s interest in a particular player and give “some indication of consideration.”
“Somebody might not even be trading a player, but if I called and told them I was going to trade them, CeeDee Lamb, I’m using that as an illustration, tongue and cheek, then they might get interested in the trade,” said Jones.
He said that all of this goes into trade conversations across the league.
“All of that is out there. That’s why you don’t have an answer when someone says, ‘Are trades a possibility?’ Yes, they are. But the price you would have to do to make the trade is not acceptable. It takes away from your team than you’re willing to give,” he said.
So it seems that Jones is standing firm that unless it’s a good trade for a reasonable price, the Cowboys will shy away from participating in any trade acquisitions.
