Dallas Cowboys News, April 23: NFL Insider Mocks OT to Dallas, Team Could Improve in Draft Despite Inactivity in Free Agency, and More

Just a few days away from the 2024 NFL Draft, what options could the Dallas Cowboys go at No. 24 overall? More on that in the latest Cowboys news.

The Dallas Cowboys still have much to address ahead of the NFL Draft on Thursday night. Since the start of free agency, Dallas has only signed one outside free agent. With linebacker Eric Kendricks signed, the Cowboys have an opportunity to reshape the fabric of their team through the weekend’s festivities.

That and more in today’s Cowboys news!

NFL Insider Mocks OT to Dallas

Pro Football Network NFL Insider Adam Caplan is a fan of the Cowboys drafting an offensive tackle in the first round.

In his first two mock drafts, Caplan had Dallas selecting Washington offensive tackle Troy Fautanu with the No. 24 selection. Then, in his third and fourth mocks, Dallas went with Georgia OT Amarius Mims, and in his latest mock draft, Caplan mocked Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton to Dallas.

“We’re told that Tyler Guyton projects to be able to play left or right tackle at the next level (not guard),” Caplan wrote. “By adding the Oklahoma Sooner in this 2024 NFL Mock Draft, the Dallas Cowboys can keep Tyler Smith inside at guard.”

Former Cowboys RB Becomes HS Head Coach

Former Cowboys running back Phillip Tanner was born and raised in Dallas, attending Justin F. Kimball High School. He went on to play in the NFL from 2011-2014 with the Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and San Francisco 49ers.

After coaching Fort Worth Southwest in 2023, Tanner is set to take over the head coaching position at Burleson High School.

“I’m excited to be the next head football coach here at Burleson High School,” Tanner said via Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Charles Baggarly. “It’s such an honor, and I’m looking forward to laying a solid foundation and having a great season. Go Elks!”

Team Could Improve in Draft Despite Inactivity in Free Agency

Pro Football Network’s Tony Catalina recently wrote an article for Blogging The Boys, discussing Dallas’ inactivity this offseason and how it could affect the draft.

“There have been countless naysayers and people puzzled by the team’s lack of inactivity this offseason,” Catalina wrote. “However, as they approach the upcoming weekend with all of that in the past and only two outside free agents to speak of, the Cowboys need to knock this draft out of the park.

“It didn’t have to be this vital, with the sense of so much pressure for contributors on day one. However, the Cowboys have chosen, and prefer, this path. If you have listened to their free agent philosophy and how they view outside talent acquisitions, it’s evident that this is their plan of attack.”

    Multi-Faceted OL Mocked to Cowboys

In one final Cowboys mock draft for The Athletic, Jon Machota and Saad Yousuf took picks. The first of which was Duke offensive lineman Graham Barton, who is thought to have multi-positional flexibility.

“While we discussed Guyton, Barton ended up being the pick mainly because we wanted to see how the rest of the draft would unfold if offensive tackle wasn’t addressed in Round 1,” they wrote.

“In this scenario, the Cowboys would get an immediate plug-and-play starter at center or guard. Most likely, Barton would work at center. If that happened, Dallas could still attempt to get a starting left tackle in one of the next two rounds, but it would seemingly signal moving Tyler Smith from left guard to left tackle. T.J. Bass could then potentially be the starting left guard.”
