The Dallas Cowboys come into this matchup after a tough Week 1 loss to the defending Super Bowl champions. In what turned out to be an offensive shootout, Dallas managed to go toe-to-toe with Tom Brady and his impressive stockpile of Tampa Bay weapons. Dak Prescott looked good coming off his season-ending ankle injury, throwing the ball 58 times. The defense, however, continued to look as bad as they did in 2020.
Meanwhile, the Chargers are coming off a huge road win against another NFC East foe, the Washington Football Team. WFT has one of the most impressive front sevens in the NFL, and that was on display in their game against Los Angeles. However, Justin Herbert continued to look impressive and threw for 337 yards against a Washington team that limited opposing passers to just 193 yards per game in 2020.
Will this game be another offensive shootout?
The short and easy answer to whether or not this will be an offensive shootout is “yes.” The Cowboys’ defense allowed 379 yards, a 64% completion rate, and 4 passing touchdowns against the Buccaneers. Herbert put up similar numbers against a much better Washington defensive unit. He should be able to move the ball down the field with ease in this one.
The biggest question here will be what the Cowboys’ offense will be able to do against the Chargers’ defense. Will they be able to move the ball as easily as they did against Tampa Bay? Will the loss of Michael Gallup leave a hole that the Cowboys won’t be able to fill?
It is tough to say who will come out on top here. However, the Cowboys are 10-6 to the over in games with totals of 50+ points over the past five seasons. The defense has done nothing to inspire any sort of confidence — take the over 55.
These teams should provide the highest score on the Week 2 slate. I also lean towards a Cowboys victory here simply because they are 5-1 ATS in their last six games as an underdog. They will be doing everything they can to ensure they don’t start the season 0-2.
