After Quiet Start to Offseason, Cowboys Trying To Make Big Splash By Pursuing Super Bowl MVP

The Dallas Cowboys have had a quiet free agency period as the first week winds down. No new signing is set to earn more than $4 million annually.

However, that could change as they pursue former Super Bowl MVP, Triple Crown winner, and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

The Dallas Cowboys Court Cooper Kupp

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a “sleeper team” has emerged in the race for Kupp, and it’s the Cowboys.

Schefter also noted that Kupp’s decision on where he’ll play in 2025 could come as soon as Friday.

Kupp played 12 games in 2024, recording 100 targets, 67 catches, 710 yards, and six touchdowns.

His best season came in 2021 when he won the Triple Crown, leading the league with 145 receptions, 1,947 yards, and 16 touchdowns on 191 targets.

However, injuries have taken a toll. Since that season, he has played in just 35 of 51 possible games. His yards per game have steadily declined, dropping from 90.2 in 2022 to 61.4 in 2023 and 59.2 in 2024.

Part of that decline, in addition to injuries, is the emergence of Rams breakout star Puka Nacua.

On Feb. 3, Kupp announced on X that the Rams planned to trade him. When a deal couldn’t be secured, they ultimately released him.

More recently, on March 12, Kupp shared a career montage on social media, ending his message with, “Next chapter starts now. Best is yet to come.”

If he joins Dallas, Kupp would slot in as WR2 alongside CeeDee Lamb as the offense looks to find success under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and a hopefully healthy Dak Prescott.

Cowboys’ Free Agency Moves So Far

So far, the Cowboys have made the following signings, per Spotrac:

In addition to what many consider lackluster signings, Dallas has lost several key players, including CB Jourdan Lewis, OT Chuma Edoga, DE Chauncey Golston, RB Rico Dowdle, and DE DeMarcus Lawrence.

The Cowboys did extend DT Osa Odighizuwa on a four-year, $80 million deal and restructured the contracts of Prescott and Lamb to free up significant cap space. They also added CB Kaiir Elam and LB Kenneth Murray via trade.

PFSN graded the Cowboys’ free agency as a C-.

“Dallas restructured the contracts of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb to create almost $57 million in cap space,” PFSN’s Stats and Insights Team wrote.

“Last offseason, Dallas was slow to extend Prescott and Lamb, allowing other players at their positions to sign extensions that raised their price tags. Micah Parsons is in line for an extension, and his price has already gone up after Myles Garrett signed a new deal with the Browns.

“The Cowboys signed DT Osa Odighizuwa to a four-year extension before free agency started. Odighizuwa has been a critical part of the Cowboys’ defensive line, starting 63 games in his four seasons, including every game for three straight years. The Cowboys also re-signed three key special teams players, including long snapper Trent Sieg.

“The Cowboys have been more active compared to last offseason (especially on the trade market), but are mostly adding around the margins. Dallas signed running back Javonte Williams to a one-year deal to replace Rico Dowdle, who left for the Panthers in free agency.”
