Cowboys News Roundup, March 1: Several NFL Analysts Go In On Dallas, Bigger Defense, and More

    Published on

Here's the latest news involving the Dallas Cowboys, including questions about their commitment to success, how they'll address their new defense, and more.

Following their embarrassing loss in the Wild Card round, there have been a ton of questions regarding the Dallas Cowboys‘ commitment to success, especially from those in the media and former league employees, like those at ESPN.

    Dallas Cowboys News: March 1

Thursday brought a great deal of criticism from former ESPN personalities, and Cowboys executive Will McClay spoke on how the team will use the draft to build the defense under new DC Mike Zimmer’s vision.

NFL Analyst Rips Cowboys – ‘This Team Is More Looked at for Their Celebrity Status’

Louis Riddick was the first person on “Get Up” to look at the Cowboys and question what the team’s goals are.

He said that they, “are looked at more for their celebrity status in the way in which their name circulates on social media and sports in general and not as much for ultimately what got them as an organization to celebrity status in the first place.”

Of course, Dallas was the talk of the town in the ’90s, winning three titles in 1992, 1993, and 1995. Dallas is 4-11 in the playoffs since then and hasn’t made an NFC Championship Game.

NFL Analyst Sounds Off on Dallas – ‘They Want To Be Relevant’

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky isn’t necessarily known for his hot takes. The 40-year-old enjoyed an 11-year career as primarily a backup and has been mostly neutral, even supportive of the teams, coaches, and players around the league.

It came as somewhat of a surprise that Orlovsky went on Thursday’s edition of Get Up to provide some constructive comments for the same Cowboys that Riddick also discussed.

“The Cowboys don’t really want to go be great,” Orlovsky said. “They want to be relevant, and they want to be mediocre.”

Quarterback Dak Prescott and head coach Mike McCarthy are in the final year of their respective deals. Meanwhile, former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn became the head coach of the division rival Washington Commanders.

“They are still a really good team. They are just committed to being mediocre,” Orlovsky explained. “They don’t have a desire to be great. If they did, they would have made changes after the worst playoff loss in the history of the organization, and they did nothing.”

Orlovsky also believes that the Cowboys being run by Jerry Jones is the focus of the organization — not the players.

Cowboys Seeking ‘Bigger Bodies’ on Defense

Dallas hired Zimmer, the former Minnesota Vikings HC, to replace the departed Quinn as defensive coordinator.

With a new DC comes a new scheme, and McClay, Dallas’ vice president of player personnel, spoke with the team’s media department on the type of players the Cowboys are looking for in the draft to adjust to Zimmer’s philosophy.

“As we begin the process, it’s a little different scheme,” McClay said. “We’re looking for big, athletic, football players.”

McClay then went into more detail, specifying the positions of need to address.

“I think we’re probably going to look more so at those bigger bodies at the inside,” he said. “We’re always looking at linebackers. That’s a position that in free agency and in the draft that we’re going to have to look at because we want to add more players there.”
