Deion Sanders, aka Coach Prime, is at the center of the Dallas Cowboys’ coaching carousel despite repeatedly reiterating his commitment to the Colorado Buffaloes. A new name backing Coach Prime for the Cowboys head coach job is none other than Nick Saban.
The seven-time college football national champion and former Alabama head coach expressed his respect for Sanders, creating NFL buzz that the Colorado coach could be the right fit for Jerry Jones’ Cowboys.
Michael Irvin Places Confidence on Nick Saban’s Endorsement of Coach Prime
Saban, now retired and working in the media, shared his thoughts on “The Pivot Podcast,” where he praised Sanders’ coaching ability. “He’s always been successful, whether it was at Jackson State, high school, or now in Colorado. His teams have always been well-coached,” Saban said.
Cowboys legend Michael Irvin didn’t go unnoticed by this glowing endorsement. The former Dallas wide receiver and a three-time Super Bowl winner approves of Saban’s perception of Coach Prime. Appearing on “SPEAK,” Irvin was asked by show host Joy Taylor, “Will Nick Saban’s support impact Jerry’s decision?”
Irvin replied, “I hope so and I love the fact that Saban comes out and gives love to Deion. When you hear guys like that [Saban] with such a reputation, especially when it comes to football matters and the way he handled himself on the football field and what he accomplished, he’s above reproach. So when he says a guy is ready, you got to consider that.”
Sanders has transformed Colorado’s program, leading them to a 9-4 record in 2024. While Sanders has expressed his commitment to Colorado, he hasn’t ruled out a move to the NFL, especially with his sons entering the league.
For Jerry Jones, the choice comes at a crucial juncture for the Cowboys. Saban and Irvin are backing Sanders in the hope that the move could inject fresh energy into the franchise.
ESPN’s Ed Werder suggested in a report that Sanders would “almost certainly” take the job if offered, but the decision ultimately lies with Jones. Coach Prime’s son, Shedeur Sanders, gave his view on the rumors linking his dad to Dallas.
“It’s not really up to me. I don’t really have a say in anything at all. I’m coming into the league, I don’t have too much of a say, so I’m just thankful for whatever situation comes,” Shedeur said on his “2Legendary with Shedeur Sanders” podcast.
Does Jones play it safe with experienced and conventional names like Kellen Moore or Brian Schottenheimer, or does he roll the dice on the electrifying presence of Coach Prime? The Cowboys’ fan base is restless after a 30-year Super Bowl drought, and the team needs a leader capable of delivering results. Maybe Coach Prime really is the answer.
