The Dallas Cowboys made some moves in NFL free agency when the market unofficially opened last Monday. However, some of their more intriguing moves came on the trade front. One of those trades brought cornerback Kaiir Elam from the Buffalo Bills.
The Cowboys acquired Elam and a 2025 sixth-round pick from the Bills. In return, Buffalo received a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick. The trade became official when the new league year began last Wednesday.
Cowboys’ Kaiir Elam ‘Excited’ After Trade From Bills
Trading for Elam is an interesting move for Dallas. The former first-round pick out of Florida was selected in the 2022 NFL Draft but struggled during his time with the Bills. According to Pro Football Reference, he allowed completions on more than 70% of passes thrown his way and started just 12 games over three seasons in Buffalo.
That said, Elam is only 23 years old and still has time to develop. The former first-rounder is hoping to turn things around in Dallas with the Cowboys’ revamped defense.
Elam spoke to the media in Dallas after his trade became official. The 23-year-old cornerback addressed why things didn’t work out in Buffalo, saying he felt the Bills put his development “in the back seat,” which hindered his growth.
“Coming to Buffalo, I was a kid that just wanted to improve and learn and really show off my talents. But I was always put in the back seat. I continued to put my head down and work, continued to make plays throughout the season and in the playoffs and stuff like that,” Elam said, via The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

“I just took everything I learned from there and all the baggage and improvements I felt like I needed to make and just packaged it up and worked on it every day. I don’t really see it as a negative. I really just see it as a growing opportunity for me to go shine somewhere else,” the new Cowboys cornerback added.
Elam then shifted his focus to his new team. The Cowboys are looking to return to the playoffs after a disappointing season. Dallas finished 7-10 in 2024, and the team hopes that reshaping its defense will be key to improving. Elam is committed to proving himself and helping the Cowboys bounce back.
“It was a blessing and a privilege to be traded to the Cowboys. The big market and the tradition here is something that I’m in love with right now. Being able to just go prove myself and help this team win, that’s all I’m committed to right now,” Elam said.
The Cowboys still have work to do if they want to return to the postseason. However, taking a chance on a young player like Elam could be a smart long-term move. If he finds his footing, Dallas could have a key piece in its secondary moving forward.
