Deion Sanders has been considered the front-runner for the Dallas Cowboys’ head coaching job after Mike McCarthy and Jerry Jones parted ways.
However, Cowboys insider Jon Machota reports that the search is still on and Sanders has been replaced as the favorite by Kellen Moore. The former quarterback is currently the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.
It’s Kellen Moore Instead of Deion Sanders for Jerry Jones
As of now, the Cowboys have only interviewed two candidates for the vacant HC job. Moore was interviewed on Friday (Jan. 17) virtually and former New York Jets HC Robert Saleh was interviewed in person on Saturday (Jan. 18).
Moore has a connection with America’s Team — he was on the Cowboys roster for three seasons before retiring in 2017. After retirement, he instantly started his coaching career. He became Dallas’ quarterbacks coach for a season and then took on the role of offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022.
Machota in his report highlights this fact as well. “This can change quickly depending on who else gets an interview, but the front-runner right now is Moore. He was the first interview and Jones thinks highly of the former Cowboys QB, QB coach, and offensive coordinator,” he writes.
Machota further argues that the longer this process goes on, it solidifies the likelihood of Moore getting the job.
“If Jones really wants Moore he might have to wait until after the Super Bowl. Philadelphia is the favorite to win next weekend’s NFC Championship Game. The longer the search goes, the more likely it would seem that Moore is the pick,” writes Machota.
Sanders’ Love Affair With the Cowboys HC Position
For months, Sanders kept it simple: He will stick to coaching in Colorado. However, as the due date approaches, there have been mixed signals, such as his suggestion that he’d come to the NFL only if he gets to coach his sons or his fabled conversation with Jones regarding the job that left him enamored.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that some insiders have reported that Coach Prime is on the shortlist for the job by the front office. Fans already have set their hearts on Sanders taking over.
The two-time Super Bowl winner has not yet signed a new contract with Colorado. However, he hasn’t been requested for a formal interview by the Cowboys, either.
