‘This Guy Is Actually Delusional’ — Cowboys Fans Struggling To Make Sense of Jerry Jones’ Statement on Brian Schottenheimer Hire

Cowboys fans lost it when Jerry Jones’ long-winded response about the hiring process barely mentioned Brian Schottenheimer.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has a knack for making headlines, but his latest comments about hiring Brian Schottenheimer as head coach have left fans scratching their heads.

During the Jan. 27 introductory press conference, Jones made it clear he was taking a gamble, admitting to Schottenheimer’s lack of head coaching experience. Before referencing past successes, the 82-year-old lost his way with words, and fans just went berserk in the comments section.

Cowboys Fans Take Subtle Jab at ‘Rambling’ Jerry Jones

When initially asked about hiring Schottenheimer, Jones gave a reply that addressed everything but the question: “In the almost 35 years that I’ve been involved with the Dallas Cowboys … I’ve only missed one Senior Bowl. Thirty-five years. And I think I missed one [NFL Combine], in 35 years. At the NFL, over the last four or five years, the NFL we want to come in a day early.”

“I’ve been around a lot of coaches. As a matter of fact, I wanted to be a coach. Except I wanted to live better than I thought coaches lived” — Jones’ long-winded response about the hiring process barely mentioned Schottenheimer.

Instead, he described his three decades of attending NFL events and interviewing coaches as a lifelong search for the right fit. Cowboys fans couldn’t understand what exactly happened. One wrote, “Bro this guy is actually delusional.”

One X user tweeted, “What in the world is he babbling about?”

Another commented, “Maybe he’s saying he’s always interviewing coaches so it wasn’t 2 interviews it was 35 years of interviews? Jerry Speak NOT GOOD! 😆”

“Jerry is a stupid person. And it infuriates him that we are fully aware of that,” posted one more.

“So you’re telling me Jerry Jones is a demented, egotistical, narcissist? Huh who knew,” said one user.

Now, back to Schottenheimer, whose coaching résumé spans 14 seasons as an offensive coordinator, with mixed results. His teams have ranked 20th or worse in scoring five times as offensive coordinator.

Dallas’ offensive struggles in 2024 (23rd in PFN’s Offense+ metric) were made worse by McCarthy, who decreased his reliance on play-action, dropping from the league’s fifth-highest rate in 2023 to the third-lowest in 2024. For Jones, hiring Schottenheimer mirrors previous risky hires like Jason Garrett. Nevertheless, the new Cowboys HC is confident about the job.

Schottenheimer would have to defy expectations to win the Dallas faithful and achieve success while leading America’s Team. Only time will tell if this “gamble” pays off or becomes yet another chapter in Jones’ controversial legacy.
