The Dallas Cowboys are closing in on their next head coach, and it seems Brian Schottenheimer is leading the race. The franchise’s current offensive coordinator has emerged as a favorite of team owner Jerry Jones.
After Mike McCarthy’s departure after five seasons, Jones initially pursued Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, but Jones continued sifting to consider other candidates.
Cowboys Fans Ready To Leave Franchise Over Potential Brian Schottenheimer Hiring as HC
Names like ex-New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore are still being floated, but Schottenheimer appears to be the front-runner.
Dallas insider Clarence Hill Jr. tweeted, “Look for the Cowboys to cross the finish line on hiring Brian Schottenheimer no later than Friday, possibly today.”
The potential hire has disappointed fans who took to X and voiced their displeasure. One fan tweeted, “Such a terrible hire. So many better options and they go bargain bin shopping for the guy no one wanted.”

Another said, “Look for empty seats in At&T next season possibly for many seasons ahead.”
“If this happens, I am officially done with them. Unfollowing on all social media and becoming a Chiefs fan. I don’t even care anymore,” commented one more.
“We are back in the dark ages 😩,” said another.
One X user tweeted, “That’s a really tone deaf move by Jerry if it does indeed happen.”
“Just about to give up on this franchise, 30 years of misery,” said another.
Despite the backlash, Schottenheimer has an ally in Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott. During a segment on the ‘DLLS Cowboys Show,’ Hill revealed a message from a Cowboys player (believed to be Prescott) showing support for the offensive coordinator. According to Hill, the player approved of Schottenheimer, saying, “He’ll be ready for the next step. He has the right personality and brain.”
Prescott thrived under his system, leading the league in pass completions (410), throwing for 4,516 yards, and recording a career-high 36 passing touchdowns. That earned Prescott a top-four MVP finish.
Schottenheimer’s résumé is lengthy and includes stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, and Jacksonville Jaguars, among others.
He’s been a steady hand in various roles; this would be his first head coaching opportunity in the NFL. He’ll have his work cut out for him if he lands in Dallas, coaching a team with championship aspirations but decades of frustration.
