Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract still has one year left, and he’ll still be one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.
That deal, though, will look different after Monday’s news.
Dallas Cowboys Restructure Dak Prescott’s Deal
ESPN’s Field Yates reported on Monday morning that Prescott’s $59.455 million cap hit will be reduced by four million with two additional void years added to aid the cap. Dallas still has an opportunity to sign Prescott to a long-term extension.
Prescott had arguably his best season as a professional, passing for a league-high 36 touchdowns and completing a career-high 69.5% of his passes. He had nine interceptions and posted a passer rating of 105.9, the highest of his career. The 30-year-old quarterback is in the final year of his current deal.
What the Deal Means for Dallas
Offseason moves weren’t the Cowboys’ best friend in 2024. The team brought back only three pending free agents in long snapper Trent Sieg and cornerbacks Jourdan Lewis and C.J. Goodwin. The team lost defensive ends Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr., as well as center Tyler Biadasz and cornerback Noah Igbinoghene to the Washington Commanders alone.
Defensive tackle Neville Gallimore inked a deal with the Miami Dolphins, while left tackle Tyron Smith went to the New York Jets. Running back Tony Pollard replaced Derrick Henry for the Tennessee Titans. Dallas has only brought in one outside free agent — linebacker Eric Kendricks.
There are also seven more free agents on the board for Dallas, including wide receiver Michael Gallup, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, safety Jayron Kearse, linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (potentially retiring), defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, and offensive tackle Chuma Edoga. Gilmore has an estimated market value of a one-year, $11,164,440 million deal, per Spotrac.
The Cowboys weren’t exactly swimming in cap space, nor has the team made a ton of moves this offseason. Dallas had $4,475,312 in cap space before the move, per Over The Cap.
By boosting that number to $9,475,312, Dallas has an opportunity to bolster the team around Prescott and potentially bring in a new running back. One move speculated about recently was bringing back running back Ezekiel Elliott and drafting a running back to complement him. Spotrac has Elliott valued at a one-year, $2,781,842 deal.

Dallas could also opt for someone like JK Dobbins, who is still young (25) and eager to prove himself after being injured. Dobbins is projected at a two-year, $4,367,976 deal, per Spotrac, and would only command around $2.1 million per year in salary.
Both moves would be squarely under the cap space that Dallas has found and could give the offense a boost ahead of the NFL Draft.
