Commanders vs. Jets Prediction, Picks, Odds Today: Sam Howell, Terry McLaurin Look To Snap Losing Streak

    Published on

The Commanders vs. Jets matchup features two teams looking to the future. Let's take a look at the odds and make a best bet prediction for this contest.

The Washington Commanders and New York Jets are two teams in disarray. Washington has lost five in a row and is just 2-10 since starting the season 2-0. The Jets, meanwhile, were 4-3 at one point this season but have since lost six of their last seven games.

This is the only matchup where both teams entered Week 16 eliminated from the playoff race.

    Commanders vs. Jets Prediction

The wheels have come off the season for both the Commanders and Jets, so it’s probably fitting that they meet this weekend. Both teams have quarterback issues, and the future of each head coach with their respective teams is very much in doubt.

This is a unique matchup because while no team racks up fewer yards on offense than the Jets (255.1 YPG), no team allows more yards on defense than the Commanders (384.5 YPG).

Washington has lost five in a row for the first time since 2020, while New York is one loss away from its fourth straight season with 10 or more losses.

Both teams are also in the midst of a lousy playoff run, with the Jets having missed the postseason for 13 straight seasons, and the Commanders are out of the playoffs for the seventh time in their last eight seasons.

The quarterback situation is lousy for each team as well. After looking sharp for much of the season, Washington’s Sam Howell has struggled so much in recent weeks that he was benched for Jacoby Brissett in last week’s loss to the Rams.

And while Howell will likely remain the starter the rest of the season, his future as the Commanders’ starting quarterback is very much up in the air now.

The Jets, on the other hand, are stuck with Trevor Semien as their starting QB this week. But it doesn’t matter who has been the quarterback for the Jets this season since their 70.7 passer rating ranks 31st in the NFL, ahead of only the Browns.

Defensively is where it appears the Jets have a decided edge. New York is top 10 in total defense (seventh) and is No. 2 in defending the pass. Washington, on the other hand, ranks last in both total defense and scoring defense.

The biggest injury news from Washington is the fact that running back Brian Robinson has been ruled out because of his hamstring injury. Expect Antonio Gibson and Chris Rodriguez to share the workload on Sunday.

Semien gets the start for the Jets because quarterback Zach Wilson is out with a concussion. Semien will become the fourth different quarterback to start for the Jets this season.

For all of their struggles, the Commanders are in a spot where they have looked good this season, sporting a 5-2 record against the spread as a road underdog.

And since both teams played last Sunday, it’s worth mentioning that the Jets are 5-3 vs. the spread when they face an opponent with equal rest (0-5-1 ATS combined with a rest advantage or disadvantage).

You know your season has become a train wreck when you are an underdog to a team that has lost six of seven and is on their fourth starting quarterback of the season. That is the state of the Commanders heading into Week 16.

Washington’s defense is too bad, and its offense has been struggling too much in recent weeks to support them against any team. Even the Jets.
