Commanders 2024 Free Agents: WR Curtis Samuel, QB Jacoby Brissett, CB Kendall Fuller, and RB Antonio Gibson in Contract Years

The Washington Commanders are shaping up as one of the more intriguing teams of the 2024 NFL offseason. With more cap space than any team in the league and the No. 2 overall pick at their disposal, new general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn can quickly remake Washington’s roster over the coming months.

Will the Commanders try to re-sign many of their internal free agents? Or will they wait until the market opens before adding new talent?

Who Are the Washington Commanders’ Upcoming Free Agents?

    CB Kendall Fuller

Kendall Fuller is coming off a four-year, $40 million deal with the Commanders and, at age 28, is eyeing one more significant bite at the free agent apple. He’s been a consistent option throughout his career with Washington and the Kansas City Chiefs and has slot/boundary versatility.

But the Commanders invested a first-round pick on fellow CB Emmanuel Forbes in the 2023 draft. Forbes struggled in his rookie campaign and was briefly benched, but he worked his back into Washington’s lineup and profiles as a long-term starter. If Fuller reaches free agency, he could reach a $15 million annual salary this time around.

    S Kam Curl

The Commanders are facing a similar decision tree with safety Kam Curl as they are with Fuller. Washington still has fellow defensive backs Percy Butler, Darrick Forest, and Jartavius Martin under contract for several seasons. Curl has been a stabilizing force in the Commanders’ secondary over the past four years, but he could go elsewhere.

While Curl has been productive throughout his career, 2024’s loaded free agent safety crop could impact his eventual contract. Safety-needy teams will have plenty of options, with other DBs such as Antoine Winfield Jr., Geno Stone, Grant Delpit, and Kyle Dugger hitting the market.

    WR Curtis Samuel

Curtis Samuel flashed during his time in Washington (just as he did with the Carolina Panthers), but he probably hasn’t lived up to the three-year, $34.5 million deal he signed with the Commanders before the 2021 season.

Injury issues will always be a concern for Samuel, who missed 10 games from 2017-18, 12 more games in 2021, and has been banged up this past year. But every team needs pass-caching options, and a solid No. 3 WR like Samuel should be looking for a two-year deal in the $12 to $15 million range.

    RB Antonio Gibson

Antonio Gibson’s role has dwindled since the Commanders added fellow RB Brian Robinson Jr. in last year’s draft. With Robinson around to take most of the club’s rushing attempts, Gibson hasn’t come anywhere near the 1,000-yard season he put up in 2021.

He’s a talented pass catcher, which makes sense, given that he played receiver at Memphis. He posted a career-high 59 targets and 48 receptions in 2023 and has managed at least 35 catches in every season of his career.

Gibson seems likely to explore his options in free agency. Speculatively, he could make sense as a Jerick McKinnon replacement for the Kansas City Chiefs.

    QB Jacoby Brissett

Already the NFL’s highest-paid backup QB at $8 million per year, Jacoby Brissett figures to retain that title heading into next season. While he might get a chance to compete for a starting role in 2024, teams might be wary after Brissett spent the entire 2023 campaign on the bench.
