The Washington Commanders selected Luke McCaffrey with the No. 100 overall pick in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
McCaffrey had a terrific performance at the NFL Combine, which significantly helped his draft stock and allowed him to be a third-round selection. Let’s look back on McCaffrey’s NFL Combine testing, including his blazing 40-yard dash time.
Luke McCaffrey Impressive NFL Combine Performance
While at Rice, McCaffrey made the move from quarterback to wide receiver. At the NFL Combine, he measured in at 6’1 5/8″ and 198 pounds. His height and weight certainly stack up better against his fellow wide receivers than quarterbacks.
McCaffrey made a strong impression beyond his measurables, as he dazzled in the 40-yard dash and excelled in the three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle.
How Fast Is McCaffrey?
McCaffrey ran a 4.47-second 40-yard dash, which puts him in the 69th percentile in direct comparison to his peers at wide receiver.
When Luke was going through the NFL’s pre-draft process, there were inevitably many comparisons to his brother, San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.
During the NFL Network’s broadcast of the NFL Combine, they compared the brothers’ 40-yard dash times, with Luke just barely beating Christian.

While McCaffrey’s 40-yard dash impressed NFL general managers, his athleticism was on display throughout other drills too.
McCaffrey had a 6.7-second three-cone drill, which put him in the 87th percentile. And his 4.02-second 20-yard shuttle put him in the 91st percentile of that category, as well.
How Old Is McCaffrey?
Born on April 2, 2001, McCaffrey turned 23 years old just a few weeks before the NFL Draft.
Because of his spring birthday, McCaffrey will not turn 24 years old until he’s entering his second season in the NFL.
McCaffrey is older than many prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he’s the same age as his rookie teammate Jayden Daniels, who went No. 2 overall.
Revisiting McCaffrey’s College Career
The McCaffrey bloodline in the NFL is starting to flirt with royalty status. Ed McCaffrey — father to both Christian and Luke — had an excellent NFL career with 7,422 receiving yards and 55 TDs.
To say Luke grew up in a football family would be an understatement. He drew a four-star prospect rating from ESPN during his prep days at Valor Christian High School.
He started his college career at Nebraska as a quarterback but occasionally contributed as a ball carrier.
After transferring to Rice, McCaffrey transitioned to wide receiver on a full-time basis entering the 2022 season, taking off with 58 receptions for 723 yards and six scores.

He improved across the board during his final collegiate season with the Owls in 2023 with 71 receptions for 992 yards and 13 TDs while adding an extra 117 yards on the ground.
McCaffrey’s collegiate production looks closer to a high school player who was asked to do a little bit of everything on the offensive side of the football.
Now, he’s looking to follow in his father’s footsteps and put together a successful career as an NFL wide receiver.
