College football starting quarterback announcements
Temple named D’Wan Mathis their starting quarterback once again for 2022. The Georgia transfer played in seven games last season, leading the Owls with 1,223 passing yards and six touchdowns. This came after Illinois announced that Syracuse transfer Tommy DeVito had won the job in Champagne. DeVito beat out the incumbent starter and one-time Rutgers transfer Artur Sitkowski for the role.
In 2021, DeVito had played in three games for Syracuse before giving way to Garrett Shrader and ultimately leaving the program. DeVito has thrown for 3,866 yards and 28 career touchdowns in his four-year career as well as 217 rushing yards and four scores on the ground.
Michael Penix was named the starter at Washington, beating out highly-ranked recruit Sam Huard and last year’s starter Dylan Morris. Penix, a transfer from Indiana, was on the shortlist for nearly every preseason award last fall before injuries and lack of success at Indiana forced his hand to transfer out west this offseason.
Each year, quarterback battles take headlines across the country. As the 2022 season approached, the national landscape of starting college football QBs became clearer and clearer.
Monday prior to Week 0, the starting quarterback situation was made clear at several universities: Louisiana Tech choosing Matthew Downing, Old Dominion selecting Hayden Wolff, and the successor to a historic quarterback in the ACC was also announced.
Highlighting the ACC QB battles, North Carolina’s redshirt freshman Drake Maye was announced the starter for the Tar Heels in 2022. Maye beat out fellow youngster Jacolby Criswell in the battle to replace legendary UNC QB Sam Howell.
Elsewhere, multiple transfer quarterbacks have earned the starting nods at their respective universities at the onset of fall camp. Gerry Bohanon transferred from Baylor to USF and beat out incumbent starter Timmy McClain. Carter Bradley moved on from Toledo to South Alabama to unseat Desmond Trotter at South Alabama.
Perhaps one of the bigger surprises to the college football starting quarterback landscape was West Florida transfer QB Austin Reed winning the job at Western Kentucky. Following in the footsteps of fellow FCS-to-FBS transfer and now New England Patriots QB Bailey Zappe, Reed is set up for success in the high-flying offense at WKU.
Reed beat out journeyman QB Jarret Doege who transferred from West Virginia after two successful years with the Mountaineers following his transfer from Bowling Green. Doege has now landed at Troy for his fourth school in five seasons.
