The Cincinnati Bengals will be thin at running back today against the San Francisco 49ers after placing rookie Chase Brown on injured reserve on Saturday.
Brown suffered a hamstring injury in practice Thursday and will not be eligible to play again until Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers at the earliest.
“I think it’s a reasonable expectation to see him play more,” offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said Wednesday. “(Joe) Mixon’s been playing a lot of snaps, and just like the defensive line, you’re trying to make sure your guys are fresh over the long haul. We’ve got to keep Joe fresh over the course of the season.”
The move leaves the team with Trayveon Williams and Chris Evans as the backups to Mixon.
Williams has five carries for 20 yards and four catches for seven yards on 67 snaps this season, while Evans has two rushes for 12 yards and one reception for -1 yard on 12 snaps.
The Bengals did not fill Brown’s vacancy on the 53-man roster, so they only have four inactives today, led by linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither, who is missing his fourth consecutive game with a knee injury. The other three are offensive lineman Jackson Carman, cornerback DJ Ivey and center Trey Hill.
The 49ers will be without starting left tackle Trent Williams (ankle) in addition to wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder), who was ruled out Friday.
