‘They Didn’t Want Me’ — Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy Fired Up To Face Bills in Playoffs After Buffalo Passed on Him in NFL Draft

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy plays with a chip on his shoulder -- the Bills passing on him in the draft has a role in that.

It was no secret the Buffalo Bills were going to draft a wide receiver early in the 2024 NFL Draft. They had an opportunity to draft the fastest man ever at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. However, they traded their first-round pick to the Kansas City Chiefs, creating a seismic ripple that landed Worthy with Patrick Mahomes and Co.

Here the Chiefs are in the AFC Championship Game again, looking for a three-peat.

Xavier Worthy Said It’s a Blessing Buffalo Didn’t Draft Him

Worthy thought he was going to Buffalo. The Bills had lost all of their receivers either through trade or free agency.

Quarterback Josh Allen needed new weapons in his arsenal.

Instead of drafting Worthy, who formed quite the tandem with Adonai Mitchell at the University of Texas, they traded their first-round pick to the team who seems to always have their number in the playoffs.

The Chiefs stepped up and added more speed to their depth chart by drafting Worthy.

The Bills would end up taking former Florida State University wide receiver Keon Coleman in the second round. Despite missing four weeks with a wrist injury, he still had a good season. He finished the regular season with 29 receptions for 556 yards and scored four touchdowns.

They would also trade for wide receiver Amari Cooper during the season.

However, Worthy had the better season. He had 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns.

“I mean, I take it as a blessing and I feel like it’s a sign that they didn’t want me,” Worthy said. “At the end of the day, I’m going to play with my chip on my shoulder. This game means a little bit more. Obviously, it’s the AFC Championship Game, but this is a team that traded their pick away to get somebody else.”

“I feel like I just kept stacking every game,” Worthy detailed. “All the vets like Pat, Trav, D-Hop, JuJu; I mean, having guys like that makes it real easy just to give you insight on the game and just learning from them and keep taking tools from them. I mean, I can’t appreciate it enough, just learning from D-Hop — as D-Hop says, I’m kind of like the little brother, so just getting knowledge from them is going to keep expanding my game.”

Worthy said he is constantly talking with the older veterans like Travis Kelce to get a better insight on the professional game. He will take advice from anyone qualified to give it.

“Having the insight from the older guys and just understanding — talking to Trav all the time, he has the best connection with Pat, probably the best connection in the league,” Worthy said. “Just having a feel for what Trav likes and Pat likes, just playing off of them makes it real easy.”
