Kansas City Chiefs News Roundup Feb. 29

While plenty of teams will likely show interest in Sneed, Kansas City will have plenty of other questions to answer this offseason, especially after they were rated as the second-worst franchise, according to the NFLPA’s player survey. All of that and more in today’s Chiefs news roundup!

L’Jarius Sneed Landing Spots After Given Permission To Seek a Trade by Chiefs

It’s not often that you see a Super Bowl winner move on from one of their best defensive players, but several teams will be bidding for L’Jarius Sneed’s services in a potential trade. Yet, that’s exactly what the Chiefs might do with cornerback Sneed, who will reportedly receive the franchise tag and be given permission to seek a trade.

Sneed is ranked as one of the top defensive free agents available this offseason, and several teams around the NFL are in desperate need of help at cornerback. While the Philadelphia Eagles could certainly use more help in their secondary, Sneed will likely be out of their price range. The Detroit Lions make far more sense as a potential landing spot for Sneed.

NFL Report Card: Chiefs Grade as League’s Second-Worst Franchise by NFLPA

Despite seeing plenty of success on the field, the Chiefs were exposed for their struggles off the field in this year’s NFLPA player survey. Kansas City received the second-worst grade in the entire league, with only the Washington Commanders beneath them.

The Chiefs were heavily criticized and received ‘F’ grades in several categories, including their locker room, training staff, and nutritionist/dietician. Despite all of these issues and poor grades off the field, Kansas City continues to be a dominant franchise in the NFL.

Report: KC Chiefs Defensive Backs Coach Dave Merritt Interviewing for 49ers DC Job

Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt is interviewing for the 49ers defensive coordinator job. Merritt is a long-time secondary coach in the NFL and has spent 10 years of his career coaching alongside Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Considering the development of players such as L’Jarius Sneed and Trent McDuffie, it’s easy to see why the 49ers would be interested in hiring Merritt away from Kansas City. Their own offense was just suffocated by Spagnuolo’s scheme in Super Bowl 58 as well.

Source: Chiefs Release Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Save $12M

In a not-so-surprising move, the Chiefs are reportedly releasing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Given the struggles of the 29-year-old wide receiver, it was easy for Kansas City to release him and save $12 million in cap space.

Now, the Chiefs will turn their attention to a talented wide receiver class in both free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft. While Kansas City likely won’t have the cap space to target some of the biggest free-agent wide receivers, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach could have something else up his sleeve.

After Trade Request Granted, QB Zach Wilson Eyes Next Landing Spot — Do Rams or Chiefs Make Sense?

Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson believes the Chiefs are a good fit for Zach Wilson. Despite the presence of Patrick Mahomes, Wilson could benefit from a change of scenery and sitting behind one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.

Wilson was granted permission to seek a trade by the New York Jets, but it’s safe to assume that his market will be relatively weak. Kansas City could be willing to take a chance on Wilson, betting on him reaching his potential while sitting behind Mahomes and learning from head coach Andy Reid.
