According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly agreed to sign a free agent running back in a move that could bolster their depth in the backfield. The deal is said to be worth up to $3.5 million. This signing comes as the Chiefs look to revamp their roster following a disappointing loss in Super Bowl 59.

Mitchell was drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft and broke the 49ers’ single-season rookie rushing record with 878 yards in just 10 games. Mitchell rushed for over 100 yards in multiple games, including a 137-yard performance against the Chicago Bears.

Injuries have limited Mitchell’s playing time while in the NFL. In 2022, he appeared in only five games due to injuries, he started just one game for San Francisco in 2023, and was placed on injured reserve for all of 2024. With the emergence of Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo as backups to Christian McCaffrey, Mitchell was the odd man out.
How Elijah Mitchell Could Impact the Chiefs
Mitchell’s signing would provide depth and a spark to the Kansas City backfield. The Chiefs have expressed a desire for a running back who can quickly reach the second or third level, which could be an area where Mitchell contributes.
As Mitchell seeks to revive his career, the Chiefs aim to fill the void left by Samaje Perine and Kareem Hunt, who are both free agents. Perine and Hunt each have a market value below Mitchell, but are three years older. Starter Isaiah Pacheco is set to hit free agency after the 2025 season.
The Chiefs are focusing on building a well-rounded team capable of competing for another championship. Mitchell’s experience and potential could make him a valuable asset in their pursuit of success in the 2025 season.
The Chiefs have not officially confirmed this signing per league rules that dictate teams can’t make announcements until 4 pm on Tuesday, March 12.
