Chargers’ 4-Time All-Pro Derwin James Jr. Urges Giants To Pull Off Surprise Trade for High-Upside AFC QB

With the 2025 NFL Draft lacking top-tier quarterback talent compared to past years, teams are scrambling to find solutions. The New York Giants, in particular, are in desperate need of a leader for their young offense. After moving on from Daniel Jones last season, the G-Men have been searching for a free agent QB.

Their top target, veteran Aaron Rodgers, appears to be looking elsewhere. So, will the Giants address their quarterback issues with the No. 3 pick, or is there another option?

Derwin James Jr. Sees Giants’ Resolution in New England

Four-time All-Pro safety and member of the Los Angeles Chargers, Derwin James Jr., believes the Giants’ potential solution is already in the NFL.

The strong-armed QB Joe Milton III, was a sixth-round draft pick for the New England Patriots in 2024. The 25-year-old is considered to have plenty of upside because of his physical attributes, but he’s currently stuck behind rookie Drake Maye, a first-round pick in New England’s same draft class.

However, James sees an opportunity for Milton to land in New York

The Chargers star jokingly mentioned using Milton in “Madden NFL,” praising his physical attributes. But beyond the game, James genuinely believes Milton could succeed in real life if given the chance.

“Being a young quarterback in this league he hasn’t got his opportunity yet,” James said. “He has all the attributes, big arm, can move, can throw, and I feel like he just needs a chance.”

Milton’s Value Continues to Rise on NFL Trade Market

PFSN’s Zahid Rashid discussed Milton’s impact amid speculation that he was available for trade.

“Milton backed up Maye and shined in his only game of last season, a Week 18 matchup against the Buffalo Bills. He had a strong outing, with 241 yards on just 29 attempts, while adding a deep touchdown pass and a rushing score as well.”

Rashid noted the limited quarterback talent in this year’s draft and suggested multiple teams could be interested in Milton, especially after his impressive late-season debut.

“According to PFSN’s QB+ metric, Milton earned an 80.8 (B-) grade in his debut, which ranked seventh overall among 31 qualified quarterbacks in Week 18. That was the second-highest QB+ rating of the season for New England and ranked 14th among single-game performances for the Patriots since 2019,” Rashid said.

“Milton, known for his rocket-like arm strength, [reportedly] drew significant interest from NFL teams after the debut, and [Fox insider Jordan] Schultz has now revealed that the Patriots have discussed moving him.”

If the Giants choose to pursue Milton, it’ll be interesting to see what New England gets in return for the former sixth-round pick.
