Two-way star Travis Hunter had a great season for the Colorado Buffaloes that culminated in a Heisman Trophy win. Now, he is entering the 2025 NFL Draft and is expected to be one of the top picks. The Tennessee Titans hold the first overall pick, but many pundits think they will pick a quarterback like Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward rather than Hunter.
Cam Newton thinks that would be a bad idea.
Cam Newton Thinks Travis Hunter Is a Generational Player
Newton, the former NFL MVP and Heisman winner, appeared on “First Take” to talk about the upcoming NFL Draft. Titans management had talked about potentially taking a generational player with the first overall pick.
Newton spoke about how he believes there is only one player in the draft that fits that description: Travis Hunter.
“There’s only one blue player according to that reference in the draft — it’s Travis Hunter. I mean, when you think about the Tennessee Titans as a whole, there’s not a whole lot of players you think about, just in the history of the franchise. Steve McNair, Eddie George, those guys haven’t played in two decades.”
“So, when you think about who’s been a franchise player, you thrust a player like Travis Hunter into the fold, that gives you that type of identity that we want to go after — and a generational player, he said it in his own words.”
Should the Titans draft Travis Hunter or a QB with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft? 🤔

While Newton is confident that Hunter is the right pick, that is not what many draft experts have been saying in recent weeks. Since it was finalized that the Titans had the first pick in the draft, most pundits have said that it is likely the Titans will select a quarterback.
The team is in desperate need of help at the quarterback position after a poor season from quarterback Will Levis. Stephen A. Smith spoke about this after Newton spoke, saying he thinks they should take either Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward. In particular, Smith spoke out in support of Sanders, saying that he has an “it factor.”
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the coming months. If the Titans decide they want to draft Hunter, they could even roll the dice and trade down to a QB-needy team.
