‘Has He Been Coached the Right Way?’ – Cam Newton on Deion Sanders’ Coaching for Son Shedeur Sanders Ahead of the Draft

    Published on

Cam Newton appeared on "First Take" on Friday and voiced some concerns he has about Shedeur Sanders ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders is projected to be one of the top picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. He is viewed as one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft alongside Miami’s Cam Ward. However, this is viewed by most draft experts as a weak quarterback class, so no quarterbacks are without their faults, including Shedeur Sanders.

As a result, it was not surprising to hear that former NFL QB Cam Newton has concerns about Sanders ahead of the draft.

Cam Newton Worries About Whether Shedeur Sanders Can Be Coached by Someone Other Than His Dad

On Friday, former NFL MVP and Heisman winner Cam Newton appeared on “First Take.” On the show, he talked about some concerns he has with Sanders. He mentioned that he has never been coached by anyone but his father, so will he be able to handle another coach?

“My biggest question for Shedeur Sanders is, can he be coached by other people outside of his father? Because when you look in the real world, when you think about the statistics, you’ve only had one coach since you were eight years old, and now you’re 22. Have you built this protection around, has he been coached the right way to be able to say, “Boy, sit down and shut up.’

“The offensive coordinator or quarterback coach is employed by his dad. And what do you say to an NFL locker room of the veterans that have earned their right? Can Deion bench his son, can Deion cut his son? It’s the big leagues in the NFL. And I know what that locker room is going to look like because you’re talking to men now, not boys.”

Sanders is projected to be among the first picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Depending on where he ends up, there have been rumors that the team that drafts him would be interested in hiring Coach Prime as their head coach. If that is the case, there is concern from people like Newton that it could cause issues in the locker room.

However, there is no proof that anything like that will happen. Deion has said repeatedly that he is happy in Colorado. So, there is a strong possibility that Shedeur will have a new coach for the first time in a long time when he starts his NFL career.
