It isn’t easy being a quarterback in the NFL. That’s something Cam Newton knows all too well. The ebbs and flows of a season, and a career will be what ultimately defines you.
However, as it comes to being a game changer versus a game manager, in the case of Brock Purdy, Newton needs to see more and isn’t changing his thoughts just yet.
Despite Purdy quarterbacking his San Francisco 49ers team to the Super Bowl this year in only his second season, Newton is standing pat on his take regarding Purdy being a game manager. The former QB shares his thoughts on the matter and just where he thinks Purdy ranks amongst his team’s best players.
Cam Newton Says Brock Purdy Is San Francisco 49ers’ 10th-Best Player
In just the first two seasons of his career, Purdy has led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game twice, and now also the Super Bowl. Despite that, it looks like he still has some respect to earn when it comes to Newton.
“I’ve never said that Brock Purdy was trash. What I did say is that Brock Purdy is a game manager. That’s not hate, that’s just what I feel to be fact,” Newton started.
“But I still reserve the right to say this, to be labeled a game changer, Brock Purdy has to be the best player on the offensive side of the ball, and that’s not the case.”
“Man look, I ain’t recanting s—, and if you really just want to be honest, if you add in the defensive talent, and you add in the offensive talent, Brock Purdy is the 10th-best player on this team.
“Did he have a great game? Yes! Has he been playing out of his mind? Yes! Is he a quarterback that’s hot? Yes! But he’s still the 10th-best player on his team.”
It seems as if Newton acknowledges that Purdy is playing at a high level right now but is unwilling to change the category in which he sees the QB at the moment. Newton chooses to speak on what many have also chosen to discuss when talking about Purdy — the weapons around him that make his job easier.
While Newton is not alone in his thoughts, one could wonder what a win in the Super Bowl next week could do for Purdy and his legacy. Will the conversation change? Will it be doubled down on?

The world will need to watch in order to find out. But either way, it looks like Purdy still has some work to do to win over Newton.
