The 2023 NFL season is in the rearview mirror, and everyone is in the full swing of the offseason. A part of the offseason fun is draft season, which is filled with endless possibilities and ideas.
A former NFL general manager turned media personality recently made a wild proposal for a draft day trade-up. What did he come up with?
Former NFL GM Proposes New York Giants Trading Up to the Top Selection
Everyone’s known for a while that the Chicago Bears own the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft thanks to a trade they made with the Carolina Panthers last season. However, on ESPN’s Get Up, Mike Tannenbaum suggested they should move back off of the pick and commit to quarterback Justin Fields.
In his scenario, he has the Bears trading with the New York Giants, who hold the sixth-overall pick in the draft. The trade would have the Giants receiving the No. 1 pick in return for the sixth-overall pick, a 2024 second-round pick, a 2025 first- and second-round pick, and edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Additionally, the Giants would likely be selecting USC’s Caleb Williams with the pick. In three years at Oklahoma and USC, Williams passed for 10,082 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He also rushed for 966 yards and 27 more touchdowns.

“I’d like it for the Giants because I don’t believe in Daniel Jones,” Harry Douglas, a former NFL wide receiver, said on the show. “But for the Chicago Bears, this will be three opportunities that they had to get their franchise quarterback moving forward but also resetting the market, quarterback-wise. So, I don’t like it for the Chicago Bears moving forward.”
If the trade was made, the Bears would be committing to building around Fields instead of starting fresh. Fields has played in 40 games, passing for 6,684 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. He also has 2,220 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. As a starter, Fields has gone just 10-28.
Jeff Darlington, on the other hand, doesn’t even think it has a chance. “I just don’t see it as a possibility,” Darlington said. “The Giants committed to Daniel Jones. Love it or hate it, they are kind of stuck to it in some capacity.”
The Giants signed Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract in 2023. The deal included $92 million in guarantees and a $36 million signing bonus. There is, however, an out built into the deal following 2025. Jones tore his ACL in 2023 but threw for just 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions in his six games.
In 60 career games, Jones has now passed for 12,512 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 40 interceptions. He has a career record of 22-36-1 and adds 1,914 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground.

Thibodeaux, who was included in the trade scenario, was taken fifth overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. In his two years in the NFL, he’s played in 31 games, compiling 99 tackles, 15.5 sacks, 18 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, and nine pass deflections. He will be just 23 years old heading into the 2024 NFL season.
