Browns at Jaguars Score: Results, highlights, for tonight’s Week 1 preseason game

The Cleveland Browns faced the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday -- here is the score, results, and game highlights.

Week 1 of the NFL preseason is upon us, and we had a full 10-game slate on Saturday, August 14. The Cleveland Browns faced off against the Jacksonville Jaguars as both teams hit the field for the first time in 2021. Here is the Browns vs. Jaguars score, results, and highlights.

Browns vs. Jaguars score and results

    Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 F
    Browns 3 10 3 7 23
    Jaguars 0 0 0 13 13

While we didn’t see Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, we did see a little of Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had his moments but also was sacked twice while in the game. He did, however, connect on a beautiful 35-yard pass to WR Marvin Jones.

It was about exactly what you’d expect of a rookie quarterback going up against a stout defense: some good, some bad, but nothing to be at all concerned about. Lawrence finished the day 6 of 9 for 71 yards.

On the other side, Case Keenum did a nice job leading the Browns, throwing for 115 yards on 12 completions and averaging 6.8 yards per attempt. While he didn’t get the ball in the end zone, we saw him and third-stringer Kyle Lauletta push the ball down the field. We can expect more of that when Mayfield leads the offense in the regular season.

The story of the night is around the Browns’ stout defense. They didn’t allow a score until the fourth quarter. They posted 4 sacks for 17 total yards lost and allowed a net total of 302 yards, with plenty of those yards allowed in the second half.

This defense, combined with a Cleveland offense that will be clicking on all cylinders, makes for a scary Browns team in 2021.

Browns and Jaguars highlights and updates

10:07 PM ET: The Browns kneel and they walk away with the 23-13 victory.

10:04 PM ET: With 29 seconds remaining in the game, Jake Luton gets the ball into the end zone for a TOUCHDOWN on a 7-yard pass to tight end Tyler Davis.

9:53 PM ET: We’ve hit the two-minute warning in Jacksonville. The Jaguars have the ball and Jake Luton will try to put more points on the board.

9:49 PM ET: Why is Jacksonville taking timeouts? Just end the game.

9:46 PM ET: The Jaguars can’t get much going and punt the ball away after a four-play drive. Browns take over with three minutes remaining.

9:36 PM ET: The Browns chewed up a lot of clock on this drive, starting with the ball at 14:51 and ending the possession with 4:28 remaining in the game. It was a nice mix of run and pass plays on the 20-play drive. Lauletta continued to move the offense and push the ball down the field. On 3rd and 7 from the Jaguars 7-yard line, he completed a pass to WR Ryan Switzer who got it into the end zone for the TOUCHDOWN.

9:14 PM ET: C.J. Beathard leads the Jaguars from one side of the field (own 25) to the other and gets the ball into the end zone for a TOUCHDOWN via a 5-yard pass to Tavon Austin on 4th and 2. Jaguars go for two, but the conversion failed. The offense was balanced on the drive, with a healthy mix of both run and pass plays.

9:10 PM ET: The third quarter comes to a close and the Jaguars are knocking on the Browns’ door. They sit with the ball at the Browns’ 5-yard line.

8:58 PM ET: Kyle Lauletta, third on the Browns depth chart, continues (unsurprisingly) to lead the Browns’ offense in the second half. After a 27-yard pass to Ja’Marcus Bradley, the offense stalled. Cody Parkey hit a 48-yard field goal off the crossbar to give the Browns 3 and a 16-0 lead.

8:52 PM ET: C.J. Beathard moved the ball well and brought the Jaguars to the Browns’ 29-yard line. A 47-yard field goal attempt by Josh Lambo is no good.

8:47 PM ET: The Jaguars’ first offensive drive of the second half allowed RB Dare Ogunbowale to show some flashes. He is entering his fifth year in the NFL, second with the Jaguars. He’s been utilized more as a receiver throughout his career — that is, until he arrived in Jacksonville. We’ll see if he can find a home in Jacksonville behind James Robinson, Travis Etienne, and Carlos Hyde.

8:46 PM ET: We begin the second half and C.J. Beathard will lead the Jaguars offense. Beathard is third on the QB depth chart behind Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew.

8:27 PM ET: Minshew takes a deep shot to Tavon Austin for a 23-yard completion. The next play, he returns to Austin for a 12-yard completion. Minshew finishes the half with 47 yards on 7 attempts. His last play of the half is a Hail Mary attempt that is INTERCEPTED by the Browns.

8:23 PM ET: With less than a minute in the first half, Lauletta has continued to air it out. He throws a perfect 27-yard pass to Davion Davis for a TOUCHDOWN. Lauletta now has 110 yards on 13 attempts. He has looked really good since coming into the game.

8:13 PM ET: Minshew tries to get the offense going with a deep pass to Collin Johnson. Unfortunately, it is nearly intercepted by Richard LeCounte. They punt the ball pack to the Browns.

8:02 PM ET: Kyle Lauletta is now in the game as the QB replacing Keenum. His first pass is a nice 17-yard completion to Kelly. A few plays later, he completes a 25-yard pass to Felton. The Browns were also given a roughing the passer penalty putting them at the 9-yard line.

7:56 PM ET: Gardner Minshew is now in at the QB position for the Jaguars. Lawrence finishes his short night 6/9 with 71 yards. On his first drive, Minshew is sacked for a 5-yard loss. This is the third sack of the night for Cleveland.

7:52 PM ET: After CJ Henderson nearly intercepted Keenum, the Browns settle for another field goal. This one was from the 34-yard line.

7:48 PM ET: Keenum makes another nice throw to Janovich for an 18-yard pickup. After a little more than a quarter, he has 103 yards on 14 attempts.

7:46 PM ET: Keenum throws the ball to RB John Kelly. He makes two nice moves evading Jacksonville defenders for 7 yards.

7:36 PM ET: The Browns defensive line is already flexing their muscles, sacking Lawrence for the second time in the first quarter. Lawrence followed up the sack with a 35-yard deep pass to WR Marvin Jones. It was a perfectly placed ball.

7:25 PM ET: Keenum takes a deep shot on his first play of the drive. It is almost intercepted by Shaquill Griffin. Keenum continues to throw to his favorite target so far in this game, Peoples-Jones. He already has 3 receptions for 26 yards.

7:18 PM ET: Jacksonville rookie QB Trevor Lawrence is now in the game. He is sacked on his first play for a loss of 7 yards. His next 2 passes were complete for 8 and 10 yards.

7:17 PM ET: The Browns punted the ball to the Jaguars, and Chris Claybrooks took it 76 yards. Unfortunately, the play was brought back due to a penalty.

7:11 PM ET: The Browns drove down the field and kicked a 37-yard field goal. Chase McLaughlin gave the Browns their first points of the game.

7:05 PM ET: Browns QB Case Keenum starts the game at QB. His first pass is a 15-yard completion up the middle to WR Donovan Peoples-Jones. So far, Keenum has completed all 4 of his passes for nearly 50 yards. The Browns offense is clicking.
