Browns GM Offers Blunt Take on Myles Garrett’s Trade Market, Makes Cleveland’s Plan Abundantly Clear

Browns star DE Myles Garrett requested a trade earlier in the offseason, but Cleveland's GM offered a blunt stance about moving him.

A massive storyline during this NFL offseason is the status of Cleveland Browns superstar defensive end Myles Garrett, who requested a trade earlier this offseason.

Garrett, the winner of the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and one of the best players in the NFL, would certainly demand a huge market if the Browns moved him. However, Browns general manager Andrew Berry threw cold water on that possibility at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Andrew Berry Shoots Down Myles Garrett Trade Rumors

In early February, during the week before Super Bowl 59, Garrett went public with his demand to be traded from the Browns.

“As a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl — and that goal fuels me today more than ever,” Garrett wrote in a statement reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Garrett continued, reflecting on both his time in Cleveland and his career goals.

“My love for the community of Northeast Ohio and the incredible fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. These past eight years have shaped me into the man that I am today,” Garrett said.

“While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, [Ohio, home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame,] it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.

“With that in mind, I have requested to be traded from the Cleveland Browns.”

The stance all offseason from the Browns, though, has been that they are not interested in trading Garrett, and Berry doubled down on that when being interviewed by the media at the NFL Combine.

This jives with everything that Berry has said all offseason when asked about trading Garrett. At the Senior Bowl on Jan. 28, Berry was asked directly if he would trade Garrett for two first-round picks; he responded by saying he would not do that trade, and that “you can put that on the record.”

He went further at the NFL Combine, saying that the number of teams who have contacted him about Garrett’s availability is “irrelevant” because the team maintains that it will not trade him.

The two first-round picks are a relevant starting point. That is what Khalil Mack was traded for when he was acquired by the Chicago Bears in a trade from the then-Oakland Raiders in 2018.

As things look now, there appears to be a standoff between the player and the front office, as Garrett wants to be traded and the Browns are showing no interest in doing so.

These comments from Berry could, of course, just be posturing to get a team to give up a king’s ransom similar to what the Raiders got for Mack, but it certainly looks like the Browns will hold firm on their stance of not trading Garrett.
