While the veteran Jarrett Stidham is getting the green light from head coach Sean Payton to start under center, many who’ll tune in will watch for how the first-rounder Nix fares.

The Oregon star and 2023 Heisman Trophy finalist landed at No. 12 overall to the Broncos. Before the draft, PFN draft analyst Ian Cummings noticed a more improved passer the moment Nix left his previous stop of Auburn.

“Earlier in his career, Nix was a volatile but talented passer whose flaws were placed under the microscope at Auburn. But at Oregon, Nix was able to find stability and proper support and build upon his foundation as an elite creator and passing talent,” Cummings wrote in his pre-draft report.

However, Nix isn’t the only 24-year-old QB and first-round passer on this Broncos roster. Denver orchestrated a trade for former second-overall pick Zach Wilson from the New York Jets.

As for the Colts, head coach Shane Steichen sparked some intrigue by revealing his plan to play Richardson. That’ll mean the second-year passer and the Colts’ No. 4 selection of 2023 will get some snaps for this contest. Steichen, though, says the dual-threat passer from Florida will be limited to “a series or two” for this Colts home game.

Outside of the quarterbacks, Nix’s favorite target from Oregon, Troy Franklin, is likely to see some snaps in his own NFL debut. Franklin was among the first selections of the fourth round. On defense, third-round outside linebacker Jonah Elliss (the son of former Detroit Lions defensive lineman Luther), plus fifth-round cornerback find Kris Abrams-Draine, are anticipated to see some action.

The Colts, meanwhile, have their own intriguing rookie defender ready to get turned loose in 15th overall pick Laiatu Latu. Cummings called Latu “perhaps the most exciting pass rusher in the 2024 NFL Draft EDGE class” in his pre-draft report.

As for who Richardson could turn to in the passing game, he’s likely not going to have Michael Pittman II running routes. However, 2024 second-round selection Adonai Mitchell is one who could see plenty of targets. The Texas Longhorns star earned a top-25 prospect grade by Cummings, but fell to No. 52 to the Colts. He now gets a chance to solidify the WR alongside Pittman, who caught 109 passes last year.
