Brock Purdy Injury Update: Latest News on the 49ers Quarterback

Brock Purdy suffered an injury in Week 3. Can we trust him in our fantasy lineups for Week 4? Let's break down the latest news for the 49ers QB.

Brock Purdy had one of the best games in his career in Week 3. However, he left the game with a loss and an injury. According to Clayton Holloway, Kyle Shanahan says that his starting quarterback, Purdy, is dealing with back soreness and is day-to-day.

    What Happened to Brock Purdy?

No, Purdy did not hurt his back by carrying the team in Week 3 but received an injury on one of the hits during the game. The injury did not hamper his game during Week 3, as he threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 10 rushing attempts for 41 yards, a component of his game we rarely see.

His MRI returned clean, so we can take this injury with a grain of salt. We will monitor it, but we can safely label it as one of the weekly dings associated with playing in the NFL.

    Fantasy Implications of Purdy’s Injury

Purdy’s game should have no real fantasy football implications, as he isn’t a mobile quarterback. The issue that will arise is that he may be limited in one of his best skills: his ability to move within the pocket.

That ability to keep plays alive for a few more milliseconds allows the San Francisco 49ers to run their plays properly. If he cannot step up comfortably, he may take a few more hits and become more inaccurate than usual in his game against the New England Patriots.

His fantasy implications will take a bigger hit with the injuries surrounding him. Currently, Purdy is missing Ricky Pearsall, possibly Deebo Samuel Sr., and George Kittle again while also seeing an injury to his best offensive lineman, Trent Williams.

Williams is the player who should scare us most in fantasy football, even though he plays in positions that we don’t use in the game. If Purdy is without his best lineman, he could face more pressure throughout the game. More pressure on a quarterback dealing with an injury that can limit his mobility is not a recipe for success.

This combination should force the 49ers to become a run-heavy scheme in Week 4 against the Patriots. Considering the Patriots had no answers for Braelon Allen and Breece Hall, we could see Jordan Mason’s hot streak continue for the 49ers.

Purdy does face a potentially juicy matchup for fantasy purposes in Week 4. According to TruMedia, the New England Patriots have allowed the most completions by quarterbacks this season. The Patriots’ defense has also relinquished the fourth-most passing yards this season. The biggest issue is that if the 49ers take a quick lead, Mason and the running game will take over and drain the clock, limiting his fantasy potential.

Purdy should be a QB2 option in Week 4, only to be used if your first option is hurt (like Jordan Love). Otherwise, at a position so deep in the majority of fantasy football leagues, we can identify a better play for our rosters in Week 4.
