It looks like Brandon Scherff will miss out on the “Commanders” era of Washington football. Scherff is bolting from Landover, Md., to join the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Brandon Scherff agrees to join Jaguars
Scherff agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday, according to Schefter. He played his entire seven-year career in Washington, and now, will presumably man the right guard spot for the Jaguars this season and beyond.
Scherff, 31, will be able to establish himself within Jacksonville’s line quickly and become a force in the running game. With longtime right guard A.J. Cann heading to free agency, Scherff is likely to be slotted in his spot as an upgrade replacement.
Getting to know Scherff
Washington made Scherff the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was immediately inserted into their right guard spot and thrived. The Iowa alum was elected to five Pro Bowls, including two consecutive nods following his rookie year.
Scherff has made three straight Pro Bowls and was named a first-team All-Pro in 2020. He played the past two seasons on back-to-back franchise tags. He is considered among the elite guards in the NFL.
While he has missed 24 games over the past five seasons, he has started in all 89 games that he has appeared in since entering the league.
Who else is on the market?
Scherff was Pro Football Network lead analyst Dalton Miller’s top guard entering free agency. Miller had Scherff ranked as the No. 12 overall player heading into the open market.
With Scherff off the board, fellow guards like Laken Tomlinson of the San Francisco 49ers, Mark Glowinski of the Indianapolis Colts, and A.J. Cann of the Jaguars will look to garner long-term contracts on the open market.
