When dynasty fantasy football managers insist on building the foundation of their roster with WRs, it mostly stems from the longevity of the position.
One of the best cases around that thought strategy is an example like Dallas Cowboys WR Brandin Cooks, who still has fantasy value heading into his 11th year.
How should dynasty managers value Cooks ahead of the 2024 NFL season?
Brandin Cooks’ Dynasty Outlook
The fantasy production hasn’t exactly mirrored what we’ve seen from Cooks during his prime years with the New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, or Los Angeles Rams, but his first year with the Dallas Cowboys was far from a disappointment.
After a slow start, Cooks registered 54 receptions for 657 yards and eight scores working alongside CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson in one of the most productive offensive units in the league in 2023.
Cooks wasn’t exactly a hot dynasty commodity heading into his 10th season playing for his fifth different NFL team, but he still proved he can be a productive complementary option alongside an elite target earner in a high-powered offense.
The next month will prove very important to the future fantasy relevance of Cooks with him eligible to receive a $3 million bonus if he is still on the roster as of March 17. His production in 2023 suggests he could be a reliable WR3 if he remains in a Cowboys uniform for the 2024 season.
However, if Cooks is released and enters free agency ahead of his 11th season, then his dynasty value for 2024 is likely to take a hit, which he could potentially never return from.
However, that same line of thinking could’ve been utilized when dismissing Cooks ahead of last year, and he still managed to prove he has something left in the tank with his veteran savvy and big play ability.

Should You Trade Cooks in Dynasty?

There is no case to be made for Cooks remaining on a rebuilding roster ahead of the 2024 NFL season.
If you are a current shareholder of Cooks, then I would begin exploring trade options immediately, targeting teams who made deep fantasy playoff runs in your league to see if you can acquire younger prospects of a collection of late-round draft capital in upcoming rookie drafts.

At this time, it is hard to imagine any dynasty manager giving up second-round draft capital for Cooks, but if you could collect a third and fouth-round rookie selection for Cooks, then I would strongly consider cashing out before the unknown of the NFL offseason makes this a potentially more difficult situation with Cooks on your roster.
