Bo Nix’s 2024 NFL Draft Landing Spots: Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots Contending for Oregon QB

    Published on

Bo Nix enters the NFL as the most experienced starting QB in college football history, but where could the Oregon star land in the 2024 NFL Draft?

One of the more polarizing quarterback prospects entering the 2024 NFL Draft is Oregon’s Bo Nix. The former Duck has been mocked in the top half of the first round as the QB4 off the board but has also fallen entirely out of the first round in many Day 1 simulations.

Nix’s experience as a college quarterback prospect is a double-edged sword. Entering the NFL at 24 years of age does make him an older prospect, but he appears to have an advanced knowledge of diagnosing pre-snap reads, which is likely tied to his extensive amount of experience entering the league.

Where do Nix’s strengths as a prospect translate favorably to specific teams needing a quarterback entering the 2024 NFL Draft?

Which Teams Could Draft Bo Nix?

    Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings traded away their second-round pick in this NFL Draft to move up from 42nd to 23rd overall, which could put them in the market for a quarterback with their pick in the back half of the first round if they miss out on their QB4 at 11th overall.

In terms of scheme fit, the Vikings ran play-action passes 191 times last season, which was the most in the league by a wide margin. Nix was exceptionally effective as a passer off play action last year and is a capable QB in the quick game.

The collection of talent around him would be ideal too, with Justin Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson, and Jordan Addison all making plays on the outside. Nix’s experience could give a talented offensive roster a chance to sustain success in 2024 with Kirk Cousins no longer in town.

    Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders appear locked in to select a quarterback when they are on the clock with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

But in the scenario they don’t go quarterback with that pick — which likely only happens if they trade out of the number two spot — Nix would make for an interesting fit in new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s scheme.

Kingsbury loves to stress defenses horizontally with screen passes and the quick game, two places Nix feels very comfortable. Oregon’s offensive coordinator in 2023, Will Stein, had some Air Raid concepts in his offensive playbook, which should translate perfectly with Kingsbury’s tendencies.

The offensive line needs work, but Nix’s skill set could gel with players like Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Austin Ekeler, and Zach Ertz reasonably quickly.

    New England Patriots

If the New England Patriots throw everyone a curveball with the third overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft and select Marvin Harrison Jr., they will still be in the market for a quarterback early on Day 2.

Nix could mesh well with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt’s scheme, which is rooted in the West Coast concepts that place an emphasis on the quick game.

In this scenario, Nix could learn behind the newly signed veteran Jacoby Brissett before he takes the field to develop a long-lasting chemistry with Harrison and Demario Douglas for the Pats offense in the post-Tom Brady era.
