UNC QB Drake Maye is officially a member of the New England Patriots. A pick that long had been suspected to happen has finally seen the card submitted to make it true.
With the Patriots officially in a new era, their old leader Bill Belichick gave his opinion on the selection shortly after it was announced.
Bill Belichick Discusses Drake Maye Pick
Belichick is onto new endeavors, including covering Night 1 of the NFL Draft with Pat McAfee and the fellas on The Pat McAfee Show. As the pick came in McAfee took the opportunity to ask the old Patriots head coach what he thought of the move, and Belichick gave his honest assessment of the situation.

“Well, I think that’s certainly a top need for ’em,” Belichick started.
“Drake compares himself a lot to Josh Allen, he’s been doing that for quite a while. We’ll see about that,” he continued.
“A very talented kid, good size, runs well, has a good arm, just he hasn’t played very much”
Belichick was complimentary of Maye’s skillset and what he offers the Patriots on and off the field while also acknowledging he has a lot of work to do, as he is an inexperienced young QB.
Maye can be a great QB in the NFL one day, but like many young QBs who come into the league, he may need time to develop and even sit to start his career to absorb and acclimate to the NFL game.
Assuredly, it won’t be perfect from Day 1, but both the Patriots and their old coach know there is enough to work with there to feel excited about the young QBs future prospects.
Maye’s Scouting Report
While Belichick discusses the pluses and minuses of Maye and his transition into the NFL, Pro Football Network Draft Analyst Ian Cummings is a big fan of Maye and his potential.
While some were certain that Caleb Williams would be the No. 1 overall pick, Cummings was adamant that Maye belongs in the conversation as well in his scouting report.
“Beyond his natural talent, Maye shows promising operational qualities for a young quarterback. There are still a few mechanical issues for him to chip away at, and his occasional lapses in decision-making can be frustrating. But overall, Maye’s mental game is just as exciting as his physical upside,” Cummings says.
“Maye has all of the qualities of a franchise QB. Not only that, he’s one of the best QB prospects to come out over the past few cycles, rivaling names like Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, and C.J. Stroud. He should be in the mix for No. 1 overall, but he’d be an exceptional pick inside the top three.”
