In Super Bowl 59, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will compete in a Super Bowl 57 rematch.
Heading into the game, the Chiefs are favorites to win. And though both teams have been here before, the Chiefs are undoubtedly the more experienced bunch.
Current North Carolina Tar Heels and former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” to discuss the importance experienced players can have in a game like the Super Bowl and whether or not that experience is the determining factor in Super Bowl success.
Bill Belichick Discusses the Importance of Experience in the Super Bowl
Bill Belichick was brought onto “The Pat McAfee Show” to discuss the Super Bowl from an expert’s point of view. He won six Lombardi Trophies in his time as an NFL head coach. Belichick was asked about the importance of experience in those big games.
“You know it’s, look, I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but the game’s about how you play. It’s not about what you’ve done or haven’t done or anything like that, how much money you make, who made All-Pro, who won MVP, or anything else.
“It’s about how you play in the game. I’ve always told my teams, I don’t care, whether you’re a rookie, whether you’re a 10-year veteran, whether you’re a 15-year All-Pro. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is how you prepare and play this week.
“So, you know we had a guy who played pretty well in 2001, Brady I think his name was. He had never been in a Super Bowl before. We had Malcolm Mitchell who really only had one good year for us. Without him, I don’t think we would’ve won that Super Bowl.
“He had some great catches for us. Sure you have your Brady’s and Gronkowski’s and those guys, but Malcolm Butler made one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history and he was a replacement at halftime. So, I don’t think those guys should ever be counted out, and you never know which one of those guys is gonna make a key play for you.”

It was interesting to hear Bill Belichick say that experience is not as important as many people think. Fans and media members often emphasize the importance of having experienced players and winners on their roster, but Belichick does not necessarily agree. He thinks it just comes down to how those players perform on the day of the game.
According to Belichick, you can perform well in one Super Bowl, and then poorly in another. Experience is not the only factor.
