Even with NFL training camps underway, there are still plenty of notable veterans who remain unsigned. At quarterback, Ryan Tannehill is the most notable free agent, yet he appears to be waiting it out for the right situation.
“Nothing really felt right through free agency, and through that, I had a lot of peace with it,” Tannehill told the Nashville Post. “Nothing outstanding jumped up, so I just said, ‘Hey, I’ll take a step back,’ and if something comes up on down the road. Whether that’s training camp, maybe a guy goes down on a team and [the team] gives me a call, you never know what’s going to happen.”
In addition to Tannehill, who are the best remaining free agent quarterbacks? Here are the top quarterbacks available that could be in demand if a team suffers an injury at the position.
Best NFL Free Agents Available | Quarterback
1) Ryan Tannehill
2) Trevor Siemian
3) Blaine Gabbert
4) Brian Hoyer
5) AJ McCarron
Good luck if your favorite NFL team needs a backup quarterback. Once free agency opened in March, starters like Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, and Russell Wilson quickly left the market, while backups such as Jameis Winston, Drew Lock, and Tyrod Taylor also found new homes.
Although Tannehill is coming off a disappointing season and has struggled with injuries for a few campaigns in a row, he’s easily the best QB option on the market. Tannehill is 35 years old, but he’s still athletic enough to play in an offense that can get him on the move.
Teams that finished near the bottom of Pro Football Network’s backup quarterback rankings might show interest in Tannehill as training camps progress.
Siemian has 33 career starts under his belt but struggled in five appearances for the New York Jets in 2023.
Gabbert, meanwhile, started the Kansas City Chiefs’ meaningless Week 18 game but was replaced by Carson Wentz over the offseason.
McCarron was out of football in 2022 before re-joining the Cincinnati Bengals following Joe Burrow’s season-ending 2023 injury.
