Looking to make some bucks on the Bengals? Perhaps you think you can make some dough on Detroit? If you’re looking to make a little money predicting the future, it’s worth considering the past before you lay down your hard-earned cash.
The Bengals come into this matchup as an understandable favorite. They’re 3-2, but could have been 4-1 had they taken advantage of some missed opportunities in the overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers. Meanwhile, the Lions are 0-5. Cincinnati also has a 9-3 head-to-head advantage over Detroit and hasn’t lost to the Lions since 1992. Furthermore, away favorites are 19-10 in the 2021 NFL season. Take the moneyline on the Bengals.
The spread is a slightly more complicated matter. The Bengals are 2-3 against the spread this season, while the Lions are 3-2. Cincinnati has won just one game by more than the 3-point spread — the 14-point win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the Lions have lost by margins of 8, 10, and 18 points in addition to two 2-point defeats. In the Bengals’ nine wins over the Lions, they’ve won by more than the 3-point spread in all but one.
Don’t expect offensive fireworks in this Bengals vs. Lions game. Cincinnati is 1-4 against the over this season, and the Lions haven’t fared much better at 2-3. Just one of the Bengals’ five games this season has had a score totalling more than the 47.5 OU line in this game. Meanwhile, only two of the Lions’ games — defeats to the Packers and San Francisco 49ers — have tallied over the 47.5 OU line.
Bengals vs. Lions prediction
After losing a close game to the Packers, Cincinnati received some good news on Monday ahead of this Bengals vs. Lions game. After suffering scares in the Week 5 defeat to Green Bay, star quarterback Joe Burrow and standout safety Jessie Bates will be fit for Sunday’s showdown.
Sunday could be a good opportunity for the Bengals to open up the passing game for Burrow. The Lions have allowed the highest average depth of target per pass in the NFL through Week 5 (12.0). They’ve also allowed 840 air yards, the fourth-most in the NFL. While their 8 passing touchdowns allowed isn’t the worst by a long shot, their touchdown allowed on 5.9% of passing plays ranks in the bottom 10.
Burrow’s return is good news for the Bengals, but the key to a win over the Lions could come on the ground. Detroit has given up 130.2 yards per game to the running game, ranking 23rd in the NFL. Their run defense has also allowed 6 touchdowns, one of the worst in the NFL. Expect to see plenty of Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Bengals’ top-10 ranking in both points and rush defense should be more than a match for an anemic Lions offense.
Bengals vs. Lions Prediction: Bengals 24, Lions 17
