Bears Hire First Female Coach in Franchise History

    Published on

Jennifer King was a historic hire by the Bears. Here's everything you need to know about Chicago's new assistant running backs coach.

The Chicago Bears hired Jennifer King to be an assistant running backs coach on Matt Eberflus’ coaching staff. King is the first female coach in the franchise’s 104-year history. She was the assistant running backs coach for the last three seasons for the Washington Commanders.

King said, “To be a first in such a historic organization is a special moment. To be a part of that culture that’s in the building is exciting. I think we’re going to do some really cool things, and I’m definitely excited for the upcoming season.”

    Jennifer King’s Coaching History

King graduated with a degree in sports management from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., and a Master of Science in sports administration from Liberty University. She played softball and basketball in college.

King played in the Women’s Football Alliance from 2006 to 2019, where she played quarterback, receiver, and defensive back with three teams. She was a seven-time All-American quarterback and wide receiver in 12 years with the Carolina Phoenix. King finished her career with the New York Sharks and the D.C. Divas.

King met Ron Rivera at the 2018 NFL’s Women’s Forum and told him she was interested in working in the NFL. Rivera, who was the Carolina Panthers head coach at the time, brought King in as a coaching intern.

King remained in the position for two seasons and moved to Washington with Rivera in 2020. After another season as a coaching intern, she was promoted to assistant running backs coach and became the first Black woman to be a full-time NFL coach. Currently, there are 12 women in full-time coaching roles on nine NFL teams.

Eberflus said, “She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our football team. She has a contagious spirit and coaches the game with immense passion. We are looking forward to working with her and seeing the positive impact that she will have on the Chicago Bears.”

King’s Connection to the Chicago Bears

King shared how she became familiar with the franchise: “I started paying attention to the Bears playing video games like Tecmo Bowl back in the day because Walter Payton was unstoppable in the game. I used to always play with them on there.”

King also mentioned Rivera’s connection to the Bears as a player. Rivera played nine seasons as a linebacker from 1984 to 1992. He was a member of the 1985 Bears defense, considered one of the best all-time. She said, “Obviously working for Coach Rivera; he’s been so important in my life and him being a part of those historic defenses with the Bears as well.”
