With the release of Bye Bye Barry, the new Amazon Prime documentary centered around Detroit Lions‘ legendary RB Barry Sanders, interest in the dynamic former NFL star has certainly grown. While many know who Barry is and the impact that he made during his dominant 10-year career, not many may know who his sons are and how they have followed in their father’s shoes over the years.
Let’s take a closer look at Sanders’ sons and what they are up to now.
Who Are Barry Sanders’ Sons?
Sanders has four sons: Barry James, Nick, Nigel, and Noah Sanders. The youngest three sons are from his 12-year marriage to Lauren Campbell Sanders, while the first is from a prior relationship.
Barry Sanders’ Eldest | Barry James
Barry James followed in his father’s footsteps and is a former football player who played running back for the Stanford Cardinal football team for three years. Following his stint out west, he enrolled at Oklahoma State, his father’s alma mater, and played for their football team for his final season.
At OSU, the running back tallied 28 rush attempts for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Sanders’ Second Son | Nick Sanders
Barry’s second son, Nick, actually did not go the path of his father and older brother when it came to sports. He currently plays basketball for Michigan State and wears jersey No. 20 — just like his father.

While Nick is not in the family business, there is belief that he is skilled in basketball, and the hope that Nick can parlay his collegiate career into an NBA stint when his time in college is over.
Sanders’ Third Son | Nigel Sanders
Nigel did not take the athletic route in college and is a music producer who studied at Howard University. He has his production and other artistic work posted on Spotify, SoundCloud, and YouTube as he continues his music career.
Sanders’ Youngest Son | Noah Sanders
Barry’s youngest son, Noah, is still currently in high school with a graduation year of 2025. Just like his father and brother before him, Noah plays football and is a running back. Currently, the high school junior has one Division I offer to play football in college, as he recently received an offer from Toledo University.
Surely, more is to come for Noah, as he’s still young and has another full high school season ahead of him. It also doesn’t hurt carrying the Sanders name and having one of the greatest to ever do it be your father.
