Baker Mayfield Jokes About Liam Coen’s Controversial Exit

Mayfield dropped a hilarious take on Coen’s controversial departure from the Buccaneers to become the Jaguars’ new head coach, and the timing couldn’t have been more awkward.

Coen had agreed to a new contract with the Bucs, only to pull a 180 and re-interview with the Jaguars, eventually taking the job. Mayfield joked that he “left him on read” before FaceTiming their now-former offensive coordinator.

“I left him on read for a little bit, just like he left me on read,” Mayfield said Saturday ahead of the Pro Bowl.

“I made him beg. It was good. I know people are going to be upset about it, but for him, Ashley, and their kids, you can’t argue with that decision. I can’t be mad at that. As much as I would want to have him still here, it is what it is. Life goes on, and I’m happy for him.”

But not all was calm in Tampa Bay. Wide receiver Mike Evans found out about the departure after a fan left a comment on his Instagram, hinting at Coen’s move. It was a rocky road, but as Mayfield pointed out, “For him, Ashley, and their kids, you can’t argue with that decision.”

As for the future, the Bucs aren’t left in the dust. With Josh Grizzard promoted to offensive coordinator, Tampa Bay is optimistic.

“Griz is a wizard,” offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs said, clearly pumped about the promotion. “We all know Griz, we love Griz. It makes sense. It’s perfect.”

While Coen’s departure may have been a curveball, the Buccaneers’ offense seems in good hands moving forward. The show must go on, and for the Bucs, it’s all about making it work with the new guy at the helm.

Coen’s Controversial Move: Dream Job, Business, and Bucs Apologies

Coen’s whirlwind departure from the Buccaneers took everyone by surprise — most of all, the Bucs themselves. After agreeing to become the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL at $4.5 million per year, Coen turned around and snuck off to Jacksonville to take the Jaguars’ head coach job.

Coen admitted it all came down to “business,” family, and a dream too tempting to pass up. “How do you say no to that?” he said of the opportunity.

Though Coen initially pledged to stay in Tampa, a surprise move by Jaguars owner Shad Khan — firing general manager Trent Baalke — changed everything. “Literally, I’m FaceTiming with Baker and the O-linemen… they’re like, ‘Liam! Go get that!’” Coen recalled.

While Coen knows he may have left some bruised feelings in Tampa, including with GM Jason Licht, he remains hopeful time will heal those wounds. “I love Jason. Those guys gave me an opportunity. I’ll never forget that,” Coen said.

Coen’s abrupt exit may have rocked the boat, but the Jaguars are hoping it leads them to smoother seas ahead.
