Mayfield was born on April 14, 1995, in Austin, Texas. He attended Lake Travis High School, where he led the team to a 25-2 record and passed for 6,255 yards, 67 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
According to 247Sports, he was a three-star prospect coming out of high school. Out of high school, Mayfield committed to and attended Texas Tech University.
However, he only spent one season in Lubbock, Texas before he transferred to the University of Oklahoma, his childhood favorite team, and walked on to the program.
After walking on, Mayfield spent three seasons with the Sooners. He passed for 12,292 yards, 119 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions with Oklahoma. He also rushed for 893 yards and 18 touchdowns. He won the Heisman Trophy, among other awards, in 2017.
Following his dominant college career, Mayfield was taken with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Just a few months after the draft, Mayfield signed a $32.6 million fully guaranteed rookie contract including a $21.8 million signing bonus.
