Since being drafted second overall by the New York Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft, QB Zach Wilson has been a major disappointment for the franchise. After Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1, Wilson had another opportunity to prove himself to the organization in 2023, but his performance wasn’t any better than the previous two seasons.
What Is Zach Wilson’s Trade Value?
According to a report from Rich Cimini at ESPN, the Jets are expected to part ways with Wilson this offseason, but what did the anonymous coaches and executives he spoke to have to say about his trade value?
Although Wilson will be just 25 years old by the start of next season, it doesn’t appear that he has much, if any, trade value. This shouldn’t be surprising, considering he has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns through three seasons and has never had a QBR higher than 38.5.
Cimini reported that the “consensus” is that Wilson will not fetch the Jets anything more than a sixth or seventh-round pick if they can find a trade partner.
“Perhaps a team out there felt stronger about him pre-draft, and that could influence how they value him,” one personnel executive said, who chose to remain anonymous.
One assistant coach who spoke to Cimini was far more critical of Wilson and blunt in his assessment of his trade value, and he was very clever in how he articulated it.
“I’d give up a two-week stay at a Best Western. I’m not a fan.”
Cimini reported that if there is no trade interest in Wilson, the Jets would be left with no choice but to release him. Such a move would cap off a disastrous tenure for Wilson since being drafted second overall.
