Andy Reid Non-Committal When Asked About His Future at Super Bowl Media Night

Andy Reid has the Kansas City Chiefs back in the Super Bowl. But will Sunday's big game be his last as an NFL head coach?

LAS VEGAS — It’s not really news that Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is back in the Super Bowl. It’s his fourth trip in five years.

What is noteworthy — it could be his last.

There’s been consistent speculation that Super Bowl 58 will be the last game of his storied career.

Kansas City Chiefs Consider Life After Andy Reid

Reid, who had a health scare involving his heart three years ago, was coy about his future at Super Bowl week’s Opening Night here Monday

“My mom and dad told me this when they were working: they said, ‘You’ll know when it’s time,’” Reid said.

“And I’m ready to right now, let’s go,” he added, before slamming his hand on the lectern in jest.

Reid turns 66 next month, and with Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll now out of the league, he’s the oldest head coach in the NFL. The next oldest? John Harbaugh (61).

On Monday, the Chiefs’ top two decision-makers not named Andy Reid weren’t ready to acknowledge the reality that this could be it for Reid — at least publicly.

PFN caught up exclusively with both Chiefs owner Clark Hunt and general manager Brett Veach Monday, and both did their best to downplay the potential loss of the fourth-winningest coach in NFL history.

“I told Andy, ‘You’ve got a long time to go,’ and I do believe he’s still energized by the game,” Hunt said. “He enjoys coaching, he enjoys teaching, enjoys being around the guys. So we’re fortunate to have him. Nothing lasts forever. I do know that, but we’re going to enjoy every moment that we have Andy coaching the team.”

When asked if he considers the potential of life after Reid as Chiefs coach, Veach replied:

“Not really, just because he’s one of those guys that this is what he does. Look there will be a time where that does happen. But [hopefully for the next] couple of years, he’ll keep doing his thing and there will be a time down the line where I think about it more. I’m looking forward to many more seasons [with him].”

Should Reid step down, he’d be walking away from the best situation in the NFL. Veach is an excellent GM, and Reid’s quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, is probably the best player in the world.

So there would be a long list of candidates clamoring for a chance to interview for the job — both internally and externally.
