When two of the NFL’s greatest coaches, Andy Reid and Bill Belichick, sat down to chat on SiriusXM’s “Let’s Go!” podcast, the focus turned to what makes Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady truly special.
Mahomes is emerging as the new face of the league, and with Brady holding the title of the GOAT, comparisons were inevitable. Belichick, who coached Brady for two decades, pointed out that both quarterbacks share a relentless desire to improve.
“Tom wanted to get better every single day. I mean from when he was a rookie to his 20th year in the league, he still was trying to find a tip, trying to find an edge, working on his fundamentals. I get the same feeling about Patrick. He loves football and is always looking for ways to help his teammates,” Belichick said.
Reid, currently leading Mahomes to new heights with the Kansas City Chiefs, shared Belichick’s sentiments. “Great ones make everyone around them better,” he said. “They grind on guys when they need to and pat them on the back when it’s time.”
Both coaches agreed that the combination of leadership, relentless work ethic, and passion for the game sets Mahomes and Brady apart and makes them true legends in the NFL.
Bill Belichick Issues Advice for Andy Reid’s Chiefs
Belichick knows a thing or two about building a dynasty. Appearing on the “Pat McAfee Show” last month, he discussed the chances of success for Reid’s Chiefs. Led by Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the Chiefs are eyeing an unprecedented three-peat, about which Belichick shared his thoughts on what could make or break their chances.
The former New England Patriots coach, who tutored Brady to six Super Bowl victories over two decades, warned Reid and Mahomes that while Kansas City is a powerhouse, its defense may need some tweaking.
“They played well in the playoffs, but run defense and turnovers are areas they need to improve.”
Having given over 45 years of his life to coaching in the NFL, the 72-year-old believes these are critical points if the Chiefs want to pull off the rare feat. Belichick knows how difficult it is to maintain success year after year, but he praised Reid for his leadership and preparation.
“I’m not sure how tough the AFC West is gonna be, but I think, in the end, they’re gonna have some tough opponents through the course of the season and playoffs. Andy will have them ready to go, and I think they’ll score more than they did last year,” he added. [03:00]
The Chiefs are chasing history, but if Belichick’s advice is any indication, they’ll need to tighten up their defense.
