Dolphins LB Andrew Van Ginkel Could Command $12 Million Annually in Free Agency

Mike Tannenbaum named Andrew Van Ginkel as one of his five free agent targets if he were running a team. How much does he project he’ll sign for?

Former Miami Dolphins executive Mike Tannenbaum — working with the organization from 2015-18 — says if he were currently running a franchise, he would most definitely pay EDGE Andrew Van Ginkel, who is currently an unrestricted free agent for the second straight offseason.

Tannenbaum had nothing but great things to say about the former Wisconsin product in his written piece published on ESPN.

What a Former Miami Dolphins Executive Said About Andrew Van Ginkel

Tannenbaum listed five current free agents whom he would sign to new deals entering the 2024 season; fourth on his list was Andrew Van Ginkel, whose future as a Dolphin is currently undecided.

The former executive would award Van Ginkel a three-year, $36 million deal, including $25 million in guaranteed money. That means if Tannenbaum was filling in Miami general manager Chris Grier’s shoes right now, he would pay Van Ginkel $12 million per season.

Supporters of the Dolphins would see zero reason to complain about the decision.

    Tannenbaum’s reasoning?

“In my opinion, [Van Ginkel] is one of the most underrated players in the NFL. While Van Ginkel will be 29 years old in July, he has played in every game over the past four seasons and his production is certainly under the radar.”

Tannenbaum explained further his reasoning for why he would bring Van Ginkel back.

“Huge money will be spent on Danielle Hunter and Jonathan Greenard, but I like the upside, reliability, and versatility of Van Ginkel at $12 million annually.”

Van Ginkel, a 2019 fifth-round selection, was re-signed to a prove-you-belong-here one-year deal a season ago, and he did just that and more, filling in beautifully for the injured Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb — both suffering season-ending injuries late in the regular season.

With Phillips and Chubb currently working their way back from lower-leg injuries, the two may not be prepared for the start of the 2024 campaign, thus making it even more crucial for Miami to re-sign Van Ginkel.

He saw his 2023 season end in the regular season finale versus Buffalo because of a foot injury, but that does not mean the two sides are not trying to work out another extension to have the always-tough Van Ginkel back in Miami Gardens, Fla.

With the Dolphins currently over the salary cap number and in need of having that number down by the start of the 2024 league year on March 13, Tannenbaum’s wish, though possible, may take a bit before coming true.
