‘Surgeon and Artist’ — Analyst Backs Shedeur Sanders To Easily Translate His Skills to the NFL

College football analyst Joel Klatt discusses Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders and his transferrable set of skills and talents.

College football analyst Joel Klatt believes that Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders has skills and talents that will easily translate to the NFL.

While discussing the 2025 NFL Draft, Klatt highlighted how Sanders was his No. 1 QB available in the upcoming selection process.

The other QBs listed in the top five were the Miami Hurricanes’ Cam Ward, Ole Miss Rebels’ Jaxson Dart, Alabama Crimson Tide’s Jalen Milroe, and Ohio State Buckeyes’ Will Howard.

Joel Klatt Believes Shedeur Sanders Will Succeed in the NFL

Klatt outlined how he saw Sanders as both a surgeon and an artist, meaning that he had the skills to dissect defensive units from the pocket as well as make creative plays off-platform when the play broke down. The statements were made on “The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast,” with the video uploaded to the podcast’s official YouTube account.

“He is equal parts surgeon and artist and that’s one of the reasons why I love his game and I think it’s translatable to the National Football League,” Klatt said.

Klatt further dissected Sanders’ game, explaining why he is his No. 1 option.

“When he needs to be, he can be a surgeon and he can sit in the pocket and just dice people up and he anticipates as well as anybody in this draft. He’s hyper-accurate, so he’s got that ability to just be the prototypical pocket guy dicing you up down the field. … He’s got this ability to be an artist. Shedeur does an amazing job of creating when things aren’t there.”

Will Sanders Be the No. 1 QB Selected in the 2025 NFL Draft?

It appears as though either Sanders or Ward will be the No. 1 QB selected in the upcoming NFL Draft in April. Though Klatt outlined how he thought Sanders was the QB1, PFSN’s Ben Rolfe had Ward taken above Sanders in his recent 7-round 2025 NFL Mock Draft.

In that mock draft, Sanders was selected No. 2 overall by the Cleveland Browns. Though the Browns may not be the most exciting option available to Sanders, they do have offensive stars in Jerry Jeudy and David Njoku, both players who could ease the transition and get the best out of Sanders in the NFL.

As Rolfe notes, “Sanders is a promising NFL prospect. He is a pocket passer with enough mobility to make him effective. There are concerns about his arm strength, but he mitigates those with his compact release and impressive accuracy. Those mechanics can hide concerns when pressured, which is a concern with the Browns’ offensive line ranking 20th last season.”
