Aaron Rodgers’ Future With Jets Revealed: New York’s Front Office Shared Their Plans With the Legendary QB

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reported that the New York Jets have made their final decision on the future of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is expected to play again during the 2025 NFL season. But according to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, it won’t be with the New York Jets.

Jets Reportedly Moving on From QB Aaron Rodgers

Glazer wrote on X on Feb. 9 that Rodgers flew to New Jersey during the first week of February to meet with the team about his future. Glazer first broke the news on Fox, saying that in the meeting, the Jets told Rodgers they wouldn’t be bringing him back for 2025.

“Aaron Rodgers flew back to New Jersey this week to meet with the Jets about his future. Met with the team head coach and GM, only to be told that they want to move on from him,” Glazer said on Fox Sports’ Super Bowl preview show.

“The fact that Aaron used his own plane to fly to find out the decision probably means Aaron still wants to play another year. It’s just not going to be for the Jets.”

As Glazer indicated in his tweet, Rodgers will likely be released. Fellow NFL insider Jordan Schultz suggested Rodgers will be cut as well, which will allow him to sign with a new team when free agency begins on March 12.

Rodgers has one season remaining on the three-year, $112.5 million contract he signed with the Jets two years ago. According to Spotrac, he was set to only have a $23.5 million cap hit for the 2025 season.

But the Jets are electing to start completely fresh with new head coach Aaron Glenn.

In 17 starts during 2024, Rodgers posted a 63% completion percentage and averaged 6.7 yards per pass. Rodgers has never posted a yards-per-attempt average lower than that during a full season in his career.

Rodgers earned a C- grade in 2024 according to PFSN’s QB+ metric, ranking 21st among qualified quarterbacks.

“Rodgers has a -0.02 EPA/DB (27th), ranks 36th from a clean pocket (0.07 EPA/DB), and has converted just 33.5% of the time on third down (29th),” PFSN wrote. “His 6.2 nYPA ranks 30th and is very low, considering he’s getting 5.8 YAC/Cp, which ranks ninth this season.”

Potential Destinations for Rodgers Next Season

With Glazer’s report, Rodgers is likely to become one of the biggest subjects for NFL rumors over the next two months. Speculation around Rodgers is likely to involve free agency and the trade market.

On Jan. 30, PFSN’s Ben Rolfe included Rodgers moving to the Las Vegas Raiders on his list of 10 bold NFL offseason predictions. Like the Jets, the Raiders have a new head coach in Pete Carroll, who will be looking for a new quarterback this offseason.

Rodgers turned 41 in December, but that might not be an issue for the Raiders’ 73-year-old head coach.

However, Las Vegas is just one of a few possible destinations for Rodgers. Any team that needs a quarterback that isn’t in a position to draft one — such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and New Orleans Saints — could be connected to Rodgers this offseason.

If the Jets release or trade Rodgers before his option bonus is paid, New York will take a $49 million dead cap hit. Any team that acquires him in a trade will be accepting a $9.5 million cap hit but pay him $37.5 million in cash for 2025.

Rodgers’ contract also has a void year in 2026. So, any acquiring team would have $28 million in dead money for the 2026 season after the trade.

If he becomes a free agent, Rodgers will become part of a rather weak quarterback free agency class. Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, and Justin Fields are projected to be the most notable free agent quarterbacks this offseason.

Kirk Cousins will also be a free agent if the Atlanta Falcons release him.
