Jason Kelce Record Explained: A Look at Eagles’ Team Record for Consecutive Starts

The Kelce brothers have been talked about a lot over the last couple of seasons, including their meeting in the Super Bowl last season. Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has received so much attention this season for a number of reasons. Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce gets the spotlight in the City of Brotherly Love as he sets a significant franchise record.

From the current NFL standings to team depth charts to coverage of every game in the 18-week NFL schedule, we have all the news from around the league to keep you up to speed!

What Record Did Jason Kelce Break?

Jason Kelce set an Eagles record with his 145th consecutive regular-season start in today’s game against the New York Jets. Hall of Fame offensive tackle Jon Runyan started 144 straight games from 2000 to 2008. Runyan started every game he played for the Eagles, including 17 playoff games.

Kelce did not want to talk about the streak with reporters earlier this week, “I’m not talking about it. I’m not superstitious about much, but I’m not talking about that.”

Runyan told NBC Sports Philadelphia, “To do any type of streak takes a lot of luck paired with mental toughness to push through injuries that a lot of players would take a week or two off. I know Jason has that mental ability to block that pain and discomfort out and get out there to help his team win.”

Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Jake Matthews, who started his 150th straight game today, has the longest active streak in the NFL. Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre holds the NFL record with 297 consecutive starts from 1992 to 2010. Longtime punter Jeff Feagles, who played from 1988 to 2009, holds the NFL record for 352 straight games played.

Kelce’s streak is the longest by a center since Casey Wiegmann started 175 straight games from 2001 to 2011.

Kelce’s streak started on November 2, 2014, in a 31-21 win against the Houston Texans. Entering Sunday, the Eagles are 82-61-1 during Kelce’s streak and have made the playoffs five times, including two Super Bowl appearances. His 10 playoff starts do not count towards the franchise record.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said this week, “The consistency and the high level of play — I mean, this game, obviously, there is a ton of wear and tear on these guys’ bodies, and the fact that he’s done it for so long so consistently at a very high level—man, it’s a special thing. Consistency as a player, consistency with his health—that takes a lot of work, too—just making sure that he’s ready to go each and every week.”

Kelce has been one of the best offensive linemen in the league since his streak started in 2014. He was selected to six Pro Bowls, and he is one of only three centers since 1970 to be named to the first-team All-Pro team. Mike Webster and Dermontti Dawson are the other two centers, and both have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
