MLB Injury Report: Dodgers Clear the Air on Mookie Betts After Mystery Illness Forces Early LA Return

The Los Angeles Dodgers began the 2025 season with a 4-1 win over the Chicago Cubs in the Tokyo Series opener. Despite the win, the Dodgers were far from full strength in this game. Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts both missed the game for various reasons. Freeman was battling a rib injury, and Betts had a mystery illness.

Mookie Betts Expected To Be Ready for Los Angeles Dodgers Domestic Opener

Betts’ illness caused him to lose 15 pounds and sent him home early from Japan. Although it is unfortunate for the former league MVP, he is expected to be ready for March 27, domestic Opening Day.

The Dodgers need Betts back to full strength as soon as possible. Not only is he one of their best hitters, but he will also be their full-time shortstop this season. He is transitioning from right field to shortstop and worked with former All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to ease the transition.

According to Si.com, Tulowitzki has high praise for Betts and his prospects as a shortstop. Tulowitzki said, “But I can truly tell you, I think he can be an elite defender at the position — which is just crazy to say.”

Betts is 32-years-old but has not lost a step. Last season, Betts played 116 games, batting .289 with 19 home runs and 75 RBIs. He added 16 stolen bases and walked (61) more times than he struck out (57). When on the field, few players are more valuable.

    Dodgers’ Depth Is a Strength

What separates the Dodgers from other teams around the league is their depth. They are loaded in both their lineup and pitching rotation. Just look at their first win of the season to see how many players can be used to win a game.

The Dodgers used five pitchers, who combined to give up one run and three hits. But the utility players for the Dodgers make all the difference. They had Kike Hernandez take over at first base for Freeman and Miguel Rojas as shortstop for Betts. Also, Tommy Edman, known to play all over, was at second base.

The Dodgers spent a lot of money this offseason to give themselves the best roster possible. They are loaded at every position and have players who can move around, making it easier for manager Dave Roberts to construct a lineup.

There is no question that the Dodgers will need Betts and Freeman to be healthy if they hope to repeat as World Champions. But to begin the season, they have enough talent to beat anyone they match up against.
