21-TD WR Comes Out of Retirement To Make an NFL Comeback, Meets With Seahawks and Commanders

After unexpectedly retiring in 2024, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup is now exploring a return to the NFL in 2025.

Reports from early March 2025 indicate Gallup’s potential comeback has sparked interest from the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders.

Michael Gallup Set to Return in 2025

Gallup spent six seasons with the Cowboys after being selected in the third round (81st overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he caught 33 of 68 targets for 507 yards and two touchdowns.

Gallup took a major leap in his second year, stepping into the No. 2 wide receiver role vacated by Cole Beasley. He finished the 2019 season with 66 receptions on 113 targets for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns.

However, his production declined over his final four seasons in Dallas, ending with three straight sub-500-yard campaigns. That dip might have had more to do with the emergence of CeeDee Lamb than a drop-off in Gallup’s ability.

After a year away from the league, Gallup’s comeback was reported in early March 2025. Still just 29 years old, he should have several solid years ahead if he finds the right fit. With demand for quality receivers always high, Gallup is unlikely to be short on options.

Gallup Visits Commanders, Will Meet With Seahawks

Two of those potential landing spots appear to be the Seahawks and Commanders. Seattle is in need of receiver help after releasing Tyler Lockett and trading DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Washington, meanwhile, is aiming for a Super Bowl push after falling short in last season’s NFC Championship Game. The Commanders lost Dyami Brown and Olamide Zaccheaus to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Chicago Bears, respectively, leaving them thin at wide receiver.

Both Brown and Zaccheaus were key contributors to Washington’s offense in 2024, so Gallup could have an opportunity for a significant role if he signs with Dan Quinn’s team. Given his experience as both a No. 2 and No. 3 option in Dallas, it’s easy to see why teams are interested.

Seattle has stabilized what was shaping up to be a chaotic offseason, bringing in Sam Darnold, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Cooper Kupp in a major offensive revamp. Washington, on the other hand, has prioritized keeping key veterans, with players like Zach Ertz and Bobby Wagner returning for 2025.

Many factors play into a player’s final decision when signing with a team, but stability, opportunity, and contender status all favor Washington. No matter where Gallup lands, the league will welcome back another talented receiver in 2025.
