Houston Astros Warned Against Making a ‘Dumb’ Mistake with Top Prospect Despite His Electrifying Spring

The Houston Astros enter the 2025 MLB season with a lot of new faces. Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman are no longer with the team.

Tucker is with the Chicago Cubs while Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox after a rumor-filled offseason.

On top of that, Jose Altuve is making the transition to left field, and the Astros signed former Arizona Diamondbacks star Christian Walker.

With lots of new faces in town, there is a chance one youngster could make the roster: Cam Smith.

Astros Warned Not to Make ‘Dumb’ Cam Smith Mistake

Smith, 22, was acquired from the Cubs in the trade for Tucker this offseason, and he has wasted no time making a strong impression.

Will Kunkel of FOX 26 Houston reported that top prospect Cam Smith could make the roster for Opening Day.

I am told that Astros #1 prospect Cam Smith has a “GOOD” chance of making the opening day roster, per source. If he makes Houston’s roster, the at-bats will be there for him. He will be in the big leagues to play. “

Smith has been excellent in spring training, hitting .423 with three home runs and nine RBI while putting up a 1.362 OPS.

However, Smith joining the Astros roster for Opening Day has been hit with some major objections from Astros podcast host Patrick Creighton.

Rushing prospects who have five games of AA experience is the kind of things dumb, desperate, and/or crappy teams do. Not the kind of things top end franchises like the #Astros should be doing.”

Still, Smith has played incredibly well in spring training, and the Astros might have to consider bringing the 22-year-old to the Opening Day roster to start the year.

Smith Off to a Strong Start

While Smith is only 22 years old, he has been hitting the ball well during the spring. On Sunday, he hit his third homer of the spring with an opposite-field shot against New York Mets pitcher Tylor Megill.

Earlier in March, Smith also turned heads with a 108 MPH hit against the Mets.

While Smith’s stock is trending up, if he does make it, it will be interesting to see what the outfield looks like.

In MLB.com’s latest projections, Brian McTaggart had Altuve, Ben Gamel, Jake Meyers and Chas McCormick with Smith as the “wild card.”

However, recent reports continue to suggest that the youngster could make his way into the Opening Day roster despite only being in the organization for a short time.
